Hello all!

First of all, if this isn't the place for this feel free to remove/move this

I've always been fascinated by the iron mistress/Alamo style "Bowie" I know this type of knife is nothing like what the Bowie brothers carried/uses and nothing like the sandbar knife.now that that's out of the way...

Who are some reputable makers? I want one that is really custom and hand made. Not just pieced together(i assume that's what most do here, forge their own blades)

Now down to design aspects. I've already settled on a full length brass backing, clip point etc...

Coffin handle? I'd love silver and ivory but... Price limits that... What is a good handle wood for this style knife? Burled ironwood?

Would guard and blade profile be customizable? Spanish notch?

I've talked to one company already and got a price from them for what they can do

i would hope most makers who hang out here have a good reputation. price range is the biggest factor, there are makers here who sell knives from $80- $8,000. it will help narrow down the field.

I'm looking for something in the few hundred dollar range. Something that I wouldn't be afraid to use, and "differentially hardened" I forget the more common nomenclature, but what put the waves in the katana of the samurai (I want the functional purpose, not the aesthetic part)

Any builders?

I would expect to pay upwards of a grand for a custom knife as you describe.

Here is my advice, for what it's worth. Go over to the custom knives for sale area, and spend a few days looking at what people are posting. Find a maker whose style you like and who makes similar knives in your price range. I don't know how others do it, but when I take on a custom order I usually charge more than for a knife I am making just to sell. So expect your quote to be a little higher than what you've seen that particular maker sell on the forums here.

This is real particular to myself, but I would let the artist do his art. If you like the makers style then you already have a good idea of what you are going to get, just say you want an Iron Mistress Bowie with a coffin handle. The more room you give the artist the better the product will be in the end.
