I have loved the look of the SOG government for a long time but have never got around to buying one because of cost and availability in my area.
I wanted to hear the thoughts of you SOG lovers on this model and its pro's and con's.

I will basically be buying it for my collection and to play with ( i love the way it looks and feels) but may take it out for some feild use just to see how it goes.

Is it as practical as it is good looking??

Thanks

It's a neat light weight full length fixed blade, that handles pretty well for slicing and general cutting chores.
It's advantage is that it has a butt cap that works well if you need to pound stuff, organic or otherwise ;-)
It's indeed a light weight package that won't weigh you down!
Money well spent, if this is your intended first knife from SOG-K.
Just don't expect too much from it.
Otherwise I would suggest you aim a little higher up from the current line up.

I'd get the SOG SEAL 2000 over the SOG Government model, as the "SEAL" seems to be a little sturdier.

I don't have the Gov't in my SOG collection so I'll toss in with Glockman and agree on his suggestion to go with the Seal 2000.

I have the SEAL in my collection and like it very much. Hefty, beefy, sturdy, great feel, and a much thicker blade than the Gov't so I can abuse it that much more and worry that much less.

The SEAL does not have the butt cap so you can't (necessarily) pound with it. But I'm not sure I'd want to be hammering with any knife and have my hand slip and run my dainty fingers up that razor-sharp blade.....

I got my Seal last year as a Factory 2nd direct from SOG, couldn't beat the price that Loretta quoted. After that I went SOG-crazy and now have several in the collection. Awesome knives.

Hi,
It´s also a qustion of what you expect!! First I got one of the real fat SOG´s, but it was not what I wanted in a EDC. Then I bought a Government. It´s a more classic styled blade, so if your going for a knife with a blade you "know", it´s a GREAT FB!!!

I really like my SOG Government. It's fast, has sweet lines and the butt cap also works good for pounding. I have 8 SOGs and a lot of other knives and it is the one I reach for the most when going camping and hiking.:) I just wish it was bigger.

LOL! The SEAL family looks cool, but I like the shape of the Government better. Everytime a nice Bowie with the same blade profile as the Goverment goes on sale in the Custom forum, I have to hide my wallet.:D he he he

In my opinion, what really sets the Government (series) knives apart from other fixed blades is the outstanding balance and in-hand feel of this knife!

wildmanh,

I know EXACTLY what you mean.... the first time I saw the Gov't model I said to myself, "THAT knife embodies everything I like about the Bowie-style."

And that is how I first became intrigued with SOG knives, the "look" of the Gov't model. Funny as it sounds, I still don't have a Gov't in my collection.... I opted for those models (old and new) with thicker blades.

Cheers,

Carl

Carl, now that you have the RB, you should really look into getting a Government. It may not be quite as tough as the Bowie series, but it sure is a Sweet blade!
