Well I'm new here as I'm sure yall noticed, but not new to forums... I'm Nick and use the same SN on numerous forums.

I'm about to buy a new EDC knife (and light, but that's another topic)

Looking for a Benchmade (not opposed to others, but not really looking at them either...) that can be had in the under $150 range. I buy most stuff online anymore it seems...

Mostly looking at the Benchmade Mini Barrage (585)

I like the Mini Presidio (525) a lot, but I'm unsure how the aluminum scales will wear. I'm not happy at all with how the finish of the Monochrome I'm carrying now has worn. I use my EDC knife a lot...

Yeah, I meant to put that. Jack Daniels isn't helping much at the moment...

It'll be a folder, 3" drop point blade. Gonna see all sorts of use. From opening boxes, to cleaning birds, and gutting deer.

You'll get better recommendations from folks other than me but the 705 (discontinued) and mini-Griptilian may be worth taking a look at. Of course Spyderco and Kershaw aren't to be denied either..

Something about Spyderco has never appealed to me. I was just talking to a buddy and told him that I like Kershaw a lot, just never really want one of their knives for my EDC.

I keep looking at the Mini-Grip, but the top of the blade seems to be shaped funny to me for a drop point. It's flatter, right? Not sure why, but it keeps bugging me.

And I forgot earlier, no serrations on the blade. They drive me nuts.

Not sure if it will translate to the mini version, but the full-sized Presidio has what is probably my all-time favourite folder handle. Comfortable in every sort of grip I can think of, very 'grippy' (if you like that sort of handle), and built tough.

If you're concerned about how the aluminum scales will hold up, cosmetically speaking, to hard use: they'll probably show any use and abuse you give them, just like any other aluminum handle out there. Functionally speaking, I'd say they'll take a lickin' and keep on tickin', regardless of how beat-up they start looking.

If you like the Presidio but don't like aluminium handles, you might look at the Bone Collectors. D2 is pretty tough steel for general use and you get a Presidio feel with G10 scales. Comes in two sizes, also. Other than the Bone Collectors, I'd look at the H&K 14210 or the 14205 (a bit over 3").

Thanks guys!

I do love the feel of the full sized Presidio, just a hair larger than I like in a carry knife. It's kinda odd for me (the wife and I were talking about it last night) but I don't care if my truck and guns are beat up, but I like my EDC knife to look fairly nice:D so yeah, cosmetic wear is my biggest concern with the AL handles, but not a huge deal breaker. I've tried to find some pics of one that's been carried/used for a year or so. I have a feeling that the anodizing will wear better than the film type coating on my Monochrome.

I've looked at the Bone Collector knives, and there is one I really like, but I'm not a big Michael Waddell fan.

I had a Presidio, and liked it quite a bit. Handle was comfy and the flat ground blade was a great slicer. The aluminum scales wore OK, and developed a good pocket-worn look. However, the worst thing you can do to that knife is drop it on concrete. It'll gouge and dent the aluminum something fierce. Doesn't hamper the functionality one bit, but if you're concerned with aesthetics it'll be a show-stopper.

I'd say definitely look into something with a composite resin handle material. Given your top two choices up there, go with the Mini-Barrage. But I'm gonna echo dalefuller and put in another plug for the HK 142XX line of knives.

Why not get the presidio ultra? Different handle material than the aluminum version, and cheaper...

Cabela's was selling mini Griptilians with D2 blades. A friend and I both have one and we like 'em . Hold an edge really well.

Mini Pesidio is out for the Ultra! Still 2 choices:D Somehow I never noticed there is an Ultra that has an uncoated blade.

My Dozier is D2, awesome steel. Still not sure how I like the top shape of the Grips blade though.

Off to look at the HK knife series, and think about if I want Axis, or Axis spring assist.

Is there much of a difference in 154cm and 440c? I've had a few 440c knives, but nothing with 154cm.
