I'm a short 5' 3" female that weighs only 110 lbs. and from what I've been told, I'm pretty cute. I'm a little worried because I'm headed to a big town (Missoula, Mont.) this fall for college from a small rural town in northern montana. I'm a ranch girl so I'm not a weakling, but I'm still not as strong as most men out there. What I would like to know is if anyone has any ideas on what would be the best type of knife for me (under a four inche blade *state law*). In case of trouble I would like to be able to defend myself. Not only that, but what all the laws in montana are for carrying and concealing a knife. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For protection I would not exclude some of the neck knives on the market .Your size could be an advantage in the "squirm and escape" method of defense. I think the Montana guys would be more protective of females than citified folks. Just my nickels worth. Used to be .02c but inflation you know! Kevin

Careful, colleges often have unreasonable laws/rules that would try to prevent the carry of a defensive blade.
My sixth sense says that you might like the Cold Steel Spike, or if you can afford it, the Barry Dawson original

You definately will want to check on the campus laws, as many colleges have laws that are in no way related to state carry laws. You may want to look into something like pepper spray as well. If your going to carry for self defense you should also look into being trained to use whatever you carry for self defense. Also common sense goes along way. Many campuses offer night time shuttles for people who don't feel comfortable walking on campus late at night. Always safety in number as well. Beyond that, have fun at college:-).

Thank you all for your advice. I am looking into the campus rules about knife carrying, but I won't always be on campus. And as for the training, I have a guy who trained with navy seals for six years teaching me how to spar and use a knife effectively, but without killing. The campus I'm going to does offer escorts, but I'm not uncomfortable walking around it, I just want to be prepared for the worst of everything. Thanks again to all of you.

Hi nightfall, as a L.E.O. i have some advice. First if u should carry a OC spray as a first line defense and a knife as a second line of defence (lethal confrontation/rape). Because u are a women, neck knife's are great but u will need too have the right posture and dress code for it , meaning no too tight shirts ;) , if u go for a neck knife and it won't "print" u can carry it on almost everything , it's ambidextrous so even someone grabbing one of your arms u can still draw the knife with the other one! Carry the OC spray front left pocket, and use your right hand to twarth grabbing attempts (if u are right handed). NEVER EVER let anyone touch u without your approval, if touched give a VERY firm VERBAL response! So VERBAL even a drunk will understand, and every witness around u for a mile has heard u screaming STOP, NO, DON't TOUCH ME, STOP ! If he persist either give him a second warning or go for your OC spray, spray till he's down and starts to vomit or flees the scene in panic. If u can't reach the OC, or it fails and u feel that your life is in danger (and rape is included as a life threatening situation) draw your knife and start slashing at his vunerable parts, meaning the eyes, throat, neck, abdomen, male parts, etc. Don't try to scare him, but HURT him, if u been forced to draw the knife it is a life and death situation. You HAVE to survive, don't try to win the fight , try not to loose the fight ! Keep giving him deep slashes in his face, eyes and neck area ( great identification later) and keep doing it until he realises that he has lost use of his eyesight or breathing or starts to feel dizzy because of massive bloodloss. Don't stab him with a narrow spike-type knife , u can stab someone a lot before they stop and realise they got stabbed. They will die later but won't realise it for a while because of the nature of the puncture wound. Try to make lots of deep bloody cuts ( it isn't as life threatening later, and it has beter psychological effect). And don't stop untill he's down because u feel sorry for him, he's the one who iniciated the attack. Don't give men "female type" communication especially when drunk. Give them MALE verbal warnings. Fight like a lioness, u owe it to yourself and your loved ones. U should always give men clear and easy to understand signals. U should be a kitten when treated good and a wild ferral cat when messed with.
Stay safe :p

I will repeat: Get some pepper spray! Preferably Fox.

Now get a koppo stick and a good flashlight. And maybe a Stinger.

As for knives you can get without too much trouble that will go under the radar, it's really hard to reccommend just one because there are so many out there and everyone's situation is unique.

I for instance carry a Spyderco Dodo and a Hideaway because I need short, small easily concealed and justifiable implements. The Dodo looks "cute" to most people and it's legal almost anywhere. The Hideaway is a "Hands free DVD case tape removal tool".

For something easy to learn, use, and obtain without breaking the bank however I reccommend everyone start with the Spyderco Delica. It's small and it has all the basic features of a good self defense blade. I relied on the Endura (the larger version of the Delica) for protection and utility for some years and it performed amazingly well. The Delica is about $35, and even if you don't like it per se it gives you an excellent starting point. Odds are your first self defense knife won't be your favorite one because there is always something better.

Ask anyone here what the best knife for personal protection is and they'll all give you different answers, especially the experts. You have to decide what you like. I'm only reccommending this product because

#1. It's a basic design that has everything a tactical folder needs to be considered a tactical folder. It also has an available training model, it's within your guidelines, and I'm 85% sure the size will close to just right for your hand.

#2. Even if you retire it from your every day carry, it's still a great knife you can find other uses for.

#3. It's serviceable and you can bet your life on it but it's not very expensive.

Loki88: thanks for the advice, but your last sentence made me laugh. lol. To my friends, I'm known as little kitten or Pretty Kitty because when, like you said, treated right I'm as gentle as a kitten, but when threatened or pissed off I'm meaner then a lioness who's cub is in danger, needless to say, I'm compared to a cat. And don't worry, if someone attacks me first *the only case where I would even harm someone* I have no qualms about hurting them.
Deadmanwalking: Thanks for reminding me everyone is different. It's just like archery, every person fits a different bow, and only you can see which is best for you. I'm sure someday I'll have a favorite, but for now I thought I'd put it out there for wiser people who are experienced with blades to give me good suggestions. Smartest to ask, then forge blindly ahead.

As some have said you should check out the hideaway knife, designed by a woman, many sheath options, small but very effective. You should also get the training DVD that is coming out. If it’s half as good as southnarc’s pikal DVD it will teach you a lot.
Most important is get training.

feel free to cut off any would-be rapists balls off  , but tell the police you carry for utility purposes only and are luck you had the knife on you from cutting boxes earlier that day.

Get a good flashlight in addition to whatever weapon you choose. Something in Surefire's line would be good www.surefire.com). Anything over 120 lumens should be enough to temporarily blind an attacker at night, giving you more time to get away or counterattack if necessary. I wasn't really sold on the idea of a defensive flashlight until I handled some of the brighter ones on the market today. They work, no question. And there's no way on this earth that you could be convicted of any type of weapons charge for shining a flashlight in someone's eyes.
