That's a big blade and I would think 1/4" would make it extremely heavy. I would say 3/16" would work fine and 2-2 1/2" wide should cover the drop in the handle.

Do a full-scale layout on cardboard & see what you need. I did my recent 18" chopper with 1/4" X 2" 5160 & it's fine. I started with a 2" wide piece & did the layout to fit inside the 2" stock size. The 3/16" material, as was suggested by Matt, would have been good also.

Still need to weigh it, but it swings OK for what I need. Plenty of momentum in a hard swing with 1/4" & the weight-forward design. Balance point on it is 2 1/2" in front of the grip, so not really good for general carving.

cool. thanks guys. cant wait to see how it turns out. im going to a class with a fairly well known knifemaker from the dallas area tomorrow night, so im stoked to finally wet my beak a bit
