Same decision I’ve reached. On the look out for a non flipper XM 18. I know I’ll never get past the big flipper tab sticking out otherwise. I almost feel guilty for enjoying the Malibu but it’s an exception.
I love my slippy! Very solid knife, not the strongest backspring I’ve seen but it’s certainly not weak. I’ve tried it with and without the thumb disc. I find it easy enough to open one handed without the disc. It’s a great way to get introduced to Hinderer. I wish Rick would drop a few more aftermarket scales for them but I can’t complain.
If you get one you will have to comment on how you like it. Some people really like them and others don't. There is always some on the exchange forum if you are patient. You might have to respond quick if the price is reasonable.
Hinderer does offer a non flipper in different models. I'd try to find a skinny non flipper if those exist. If you happen to get a non flipper and decide it's too thick for your uses, you can have the blade sent out for a re grind to a thinner stock. It makes a world of difference.
