Looking to buy some higher end knives this year. I really like the Rockstead Higo II , but the price tag is tough to handle. I might just go with the Rockstead Hizen instead. I also am looking to get a Shirogorov Quantum Ursus.I saw a review that said is was very close to as good as the Shirogorov quantum, but the cost is much less. Here are my questions:
1. Should I be concerned about sharpening a Rockstead? 67-68 HRC would seem to make it very hard to sharpen.
2. Unless the Hizen is a absolutely great knife, I am concerned that I will wish that I just took the plunge and bought the Higo II. Dose anyone have a Hizen and love it?
3. The Knife shows I have been to had mostly low end knives. Is there anywhere in South Florida to handle high end knives.
4. There knives seem to be available now. Will they be gone in a month or two?
Thank you for your input.

Does size matter in your decision tree?
Hizen could be considered small. The price-to-material quantity has kept me away, for now.
Higo II can be considered medium-large. Mine is breathtaking.
Secondary market can provide comfort vis-à-vis MAP.
Nothing magical about Rockstead steel. It can be sharpened, but I believe the blade geometry requires skill. Disclaimer: I am over my skis on this topic.

Just my free opinion worth what you paid!

Higo II has nice lines and is nice to look at. I've got the matte black/DLC blade.

Secondary market, if you have patience, can result in a 30% or so savings on a brand new knife. 40% is possible.

Pretty sure knives in stock will be around for a bit given the market. They're not hyped like some of the others, just very much respected and get the nod from pretty much everyone.

Both Size and the Beauty of the Higo II appeal to me. When you talk about the secondary market do you meal on this site or are there other/ better places to buy?
Thank you both for your input.

Higo II.. hands down.

Stropping maintains a razor edge, If it needs sharpening due to chips just send it in, its covered.

Buying second hand = no warranty. They will ask you when and where you bought the knife from and full name. They also watch the forums and ebay to ensure this is kept strict. One reason I tell everyone whos trying to sell an unregistered Rockstead is to cover up the serial numbers on the blade and the paperwork.

Even though I got smoked one time here, I only buy secondary here.

I bought a few pre-owned Rockstead, each one represented as not registered. I wrote the folks in Japan being up front that I bought them on the private market, and they gladly registered them for me as new. Note I had the paperwork.

That is not always the case. To me it was worth it for the savings off of MAP. I’ll admit for production knives at this price point it is not for the faint of heart.

Rockstead will sharpen a knife that has been registered by another, but for a fee.
