Warden Scales?

Has anyone ever had scales put on the Swamp Warden? Mine should be here tomorrow, I'm thinking of looking for someone to do it.

If you want scales, look for a cheap Busse Game Warden. Otherwise, you are looking at filling that huge gap in the handle with some sort of goop to get it all to work together.

If you go the goop route, the sky is the limit on handle material and shape.

The Izula and HEST have the same gaps, and have accessory scales, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I made the same topic over in the swamp.

I use work for a knife company. I put alot of micarta and g10 on blades.

The problem your gonna have is no lateral material between the tang. If you jsut epoxy the slabs on, chances are a heavy hit or even jsut dropping it on the cement is gonna pop them off.

The only way it might work, is if you epoxied them, and then used pressed rivits or corby bolts. just stait thru pins wont help.

I'm not saying it CAN'T be done. I'm saying it may not be practical. You can get a Busse Game Warden for about $200 for the ugly ones on the XC. (FWIW, the Busse Game Warden has more belly than the Swamp Warden.)

Or spend $70 (shipped) for a Swamp Warden then have someone (or yourself - that's cheapest, obviously) fashion scales and a method to attach them - which will likely be some sort of goop-turns-to-hard-as-rock in between the scales to stabilize them to the handle.

Heck, I think it would be cool to see it done, but it isn't a walk in the park. That's all.

EDIT - the "goop" referred in both posts above is epoxy. Tuesday is Free Brain Cramp Day for me. LOL

If you had a relief machined into the handle scales, you would not necessarily need a bunch of goop to fill the gap in the handle. However, that machining would take either some skill to do by hand, or pay some one to Machine it.

I would think that you would cut out a stencil of the hollow handle and then use a bandsaw and cut the shape out of micarta then you would either epoxy the cutout onto a micarta slab and drill holes for the screw fasteners.. not really rocket science just some thinking :D

I'm thinking you could just fill the gap with epoxy soaked leather, and use that as an anchor to attach the scales. If leather is tough enough for handles, why not a spacer? Although I'll probably just end up cord wrapping it. :p Although, what I'd really like to do is, make a moonglow spacer, and put G11 handles on it. It would be the mean moss green glowing machine! :D

I'd like a swamp warden with scales, but its too much work if I gotta do it, so if its offered from the factory one day Im in, if not Im perfectly good with skeleys ;)

One of the things that I find nice about the Swamp Warden is how lightweight it is. Once you throw scales on there it is just like all my other small EDC sized fixed blades. I want something light and easy to carry, for me it is perfect as is.

:D:D

It makes a GREAT secondary knife for piggyback sheaths. And I agree with Eric with how handy it is for its weight. If you want a Warden with scales, try a Busse Game Warden. ;)
