Ware (cracks) flaws? BIG PICS

Hey guys,

I'm thinking these are cracks or ware in japanese sword terms. There are two of them one directly above the other. The first one is 6.5 mm long and the other is 2.5 mm long. They are 3 cm apart. I'll get pics of the second one. These are pics of the larger one. I have not done any cutting with these. Ware is not fatal, but I'm wondering what could have caused these.

Hopefully this will turn into a nice academic discussion on a warm Sunday Morn. :D

on the second pic, in the top right quadrant, those group of "cracks" are grinder marks, not ware.

that looks like a flaw that's generated during forging or heat-treat. It's not a crack, actually. But if you were to stress the blade in that area significantly enough to crack it, the crack would travel along that line. I'm probably not making any sense. But I don't think it's going to lead to blade failure unless you abuse it pretty bad.

0.002 (one-tenth the usual 0.02 because I am still sick :()

I agree that it is ware...not a real issue unless you paid a non-blem price. I'd take it out for the full blown whack it wrong test to see if it lets go.

I'm certain Bill would have agreed...

Dave, What model is that? Chiruwa handle, but slim blade shape, but not Siru? Cool looking blade.

Agree with Dan about the forging marks. I'm much more concerned that a couple of mine have cracks upward from the cho. But I've beat on them severely and the cracks never got bigger.

Other than that, I've got no academic input. :D

BTW, when are you moving to the States?

Steve

Well,

I can't get pics of the second one but it's 5 mm from the edge.

18.5" blade, 22.5" long. Bag Barihab... or something to that effect. Monster blade I tells ya!

Moving to the States? Well, I've argued the lady down to Cali. We'll go from there... :D

Once upon a time I got to hang around in Vince Evans' shop for a while. One of the things I learned was that 5160 apparently often comes straight from the mills with slag inclusions.

The inclusions don't compromise leaf springs and the spring makers don't care if it's pretty, so it's up to the knifemaker to sell it as a "period-correct forging flaw" even if he made no mistakes in the forging at all.

Kismet has it right. I've seen a few of those on my user khuks, nothing ever came of them. That is a beautiful khukuri, I hope we see more like that one...

Bill used to list them as forging cracks or forging flaws, said they would never go anywhere.
And as far as I know none ever has. I've got a couple with the cracks but don't even recall which ones they are.;)

Just thinking...when you get cracks in other items and wish to prevent it going furth you drill a small hole at each end of the crack. Not that I would recommend that in this caseof course...could make an non-problem into one.

Possible they come from forging a bit too cold ?

That's horrible -just a disaster waiting to happen! But, because I'm such a big-hearted guy, I'd be happy to take the POS off your hands for fifty bucks - you pay the shipping, of course :D

There are two forging flaws on my first khuk, a 16.5" AK. Both are on one side of the blade, located on the cho/kaudi/whatever it's being called this week. As they were running inwards (and thus, should grow with use if they were cracks) I was a bit concerned. Then I thought of the warranty and I proceeded to spend the next few months thrashing that poor khuk like few have been thrashed before. I still shudder to think about it.

Just today I pulled the old warhorse out of its scabbard; it had been superceded by the 20" siru and the 15" BGRS villager, in that order. (Pending sea trials, the Foxy Folly will most likely knock the BGRS out of the top slot. Such is the way of things.) The blade was chipped, waved, and warped every which way you could imagine. When the prying and batoning hadn't done anything to it, I'd progressed to chopping up steel trashcans, scrap metal, bricks and cinderblocks. The amazing thing was not that it had survived, but that it had survived with something resembling an edge. I slapped on the 40 micron belt, fired up the grinder and got to work. It now pushcuts through paper under its own weight. And, knowing now what I didn't then, I'm betting that I just got down to the good stuff - it ought to do better the next time around.

And those flaws? They haven't changed. R.R. knows his business. They ain't cracks if they ain't propogating. If, ten or twenty years from now one of them develops into a crack, I'll have gotten my money's worth anyway, warranty or no warranty.

I don't have any hard work around the house that needs doing but I may try to find something for the AK...it needs flogging again. It's been a while. The next week at the Camp is devoted to the Foxy Folly but I can always loan the AK out to someone else...

If in doubt, thrash it and thrash it good. That will tell you all that needs to be told.

That's how a lot of khuks used to get treated, and still do. Listening to Satori reminded me of when I first arrived and hearing some of the torture tests done.

I am so delighted we have a madman aboard. Livens up the place.
Nothing like the sound of a khuk howling and some Soul laughing.

sorry to bring back a old thread, but i just spotted this thing on ebay for a awesome price, just a heads up.

Just for the record, Dave, I came very close to pulling the trigger on that one when it was on the block in the Exchange forums. If only that handle was a little bigger...
