I was reading a book long ago and the auther recomended that one sleep in the cold with your nose coverd up so you breath in warm air instead of cold. He based his theory on the fact that birds put their beaks under their wings and wolves and dogs put their tails over their nose. Wuold this couse you to breath too much co2? It also seems like you would mke your bed wet with condensation, any opinions?

Hi Ice,

Covering your mouth with an appropriate insulating material is a good idea when the air is cold. By trapping the dead air between the fiber spaces... it is warmed prior to reaching your body. This saves you energy.

You are correct about your condensation (moisture) statement. If in a sleeping bag (or similar item) you SHOULD NOT put your head inside the bag. Instead, use a good insulating material to cover your mouth.

I've used wool scarves a LOT the last few years I bowhunted in ND in -20 to -30 deg temps. It really HELPS! I can imagine that the same principle is being applied here when sleeping.
