Warm, synthetic insulated jacket

Anyone have a recommendation for a warm jacket that's not down-filled? Primaloft and Polarguard are good, but it seems like most manufacturers under-stuff those jackets to make them thin and lightweight. Do any manufacturers make a really warm synthetic jacket?

I have a Patagonia pile jacket that is synthetic, warm even wet. But it is flammable. Keep it away from the campfire. A lot of modern hunting clothes are warm. I have been working outside doing construction at 17 degrees wearing:
1. blue jeans
2. USAF quilted flyer's pants
3. insulated bib overalls
4. a Duxbak quilted hunting jacket
5. Bog Boots.

I haven't gotten cold yet. I also use cheap lined brown jersey gloves, and a knit toboggan with face mask if the wind is blowing.

I like Integral Designs out of Calgary. Primaloft and they can do custom work. Superb quality

Here are a few companies that make high quality synthetic inuslatetd clothing:

www.integraldesigns.com (Dolmitti jacket)

www.wildthingsgear.com (Belay jacket)

www.montbell.com ( North America site, look for the Powder Light Parka)

www.ems.com (Vertigo jacket)

www.marmot.com (Needle parka)

www.patagonia.com (D.A.S. parka)

These are just a few ideas for you to consider. All of these are reputable companies well known in the climbing community for making good gear.

You might also search places like:

www.sierratradingpost.com

www.killerdeals.com

www.campmor.com

for deals on isulated clothing.

Hope this helps.

I have a very "puffy" polyester-filled jacket from L.L. Bean (sales  ). It is light but quite thick. BUT I have found that (like down-filled) it has limitations as an inner/insulation layer. Namely, the weight of outer (wind/water resistant) layer(s) crushes some of the air (insulation) out. I have pretty much gone over 100% to polyester fleece for insulation layers. Polyester fleece jackets can be had for about $10 at big-box stores - esp. after Christmas. (Watch for features like full-length zippers and waist draw cords.) Another plus is that polyester fleece garments can be washed with less concern for damage than is the case with quilted garments.

i just ordered a milspec N-3B extreme weather parka...haven't gotten it yet, but they're designed for extreme cold...we'll see how it performs...i got mine for $70 on ebay...army surplus place tend to charge closer to $150...BUT if you go the ebay route, make sure you ask the seller if it's a genuine GI issue military surplus...most of the ones selling in the $60-$70 range are imported knock-offs.

i doubt it's better than those made by the mountaineering manufacturers, but i thought i'd give it a try at that price...

If you are looking for warm, simple and light weight, the Patagoina DAS parka is the best I have found. If weight and higher tech materials are of less importance, there are many other options out there.
