It's the last day of the first gun season. I didn't get to spend any time in the woods yesterday, like I planned. It's a long story. Lets just say I spent all day fence building.

This morning I got this little buck. I know he is not a monster but the freezer is empty. And it's my first completely solo hunt on new property to me. I've always hunted with buddies who had much experience and on established ground. It's quite different when you are alone, there is a lot more to every step......which reminds me. Time to roll up the sleeves and get dirty. Come on Bushfinger, you are getting dirty too.

The Babe quote put that bushfinger photo over the top! I'm glad you it something this season. Gun season just started here and I couldn't be more excited!

Illinois has a great deer population and some real nice bucks, but I hate hunting em with shotguns. I do know it is effective however.
 
Really nice shots man, and younger deer are more tender...especially with bucks. But that's why I don't put lanyards on my hunting knives...

Man, I hear ya. It took me 3 hours to debone and slice everything up for steaks and roasts. I cut em up, Mrs Schmittie wraps it and marks them for the freezer. We save the leg and neck meat for the butcher to grind. A local place treats us real good.

Illinois has a great deer population and some real nice bucks, but I hate hunting em with shotguns. I do know it is effective however.

I understand. I, however, need more practice with my bow. I don't want to unnecessarily wound an animal.

Really nice shots man, and younger deer are more tender...especially with bucks. But that's why I don't put lanyards on my hunting knives...

Thanks. We got a lot of meat off this one. The roasts are ridiculous! And I hear what your saying about the lanyards. It served its purpose. I tie on a safety orange lanyard for my hunting knives so I can find them when I set them down. After the field dressing is over, I clean up the knife and trash the lanyard. The last thing I want to loose is my Fiddleback! Paracord is cheap enough.

Shotguns account for a whole bunch of good-eating deer. Like every other hunting instrument, used well, it does well. It all tracks back to the hunter, and obviously, schmittie is a hunter of skills.

I just got my first kill, couple weeks ago; bout the same size. Good amount of meat and fat on him.

Sadly I didn't get any pics; gets dark so fast and had to get busy dressing it, with my fiddleback bushcrafter.

Did a good job skinning it too. If my buddy can send the few snaps he got, I'll try post something for show and tell!

Got one in the Late Winter Season. The Bushfinger worked very well again, field dressing and skinning. It's getting down in the teens at night lately, so I had to make quick work to debone it. Otherwise it would be frozen in the morning. Sorry, no pics of the rest of the process.

Again, many thanks Andy. I enjoy this knife everytime it comes out of the sheath.

Should be by now, he's had it a while and blood does wonders for helping a patina along.
 
Well......actually no. I'm a little too particular and it freaks me out when it starts staining. So it's habitually in a state of being polished.

I remember being like that, a loooong time ago. These days I understand patinas more, what causes them, and what they do...so I just tend to control the direction the patina takes and keep the edge polished up.
