...but it ended up being such a lazy weekend that I couldn't bring myself to stick to a plan. So I whittled with the Wohlwend neck knife and cleaned my 12yo daughter's biggest fish ever with the BK11. Here are photos, and following those are some thoughts on the two knives.

First and foremost, a comparison between these two knives is fairly pointless; they're totally different, and I've modded the handle of the BK11 to the point where it drastically changes everything about the grip from the stock version (mod thread here). I can say that the handle of the Wohlwend knife is dreamy, the edge retention and sharpness is spectacular, the sheath is so-so, and I'd be afraid to put the knife to ultra hard use. The BK11 handle I think is improved now over the original style, the edge is fine but not amazing, I've got a custom leather sheath but I still use the factory sheath for fishing applications, and this knife is best at being completely dependable when it comes to any hard use I could think of and I wouldn't feel any worry about it failing.

The Wohlwend knife will probably go camping and hiking with me a lot, and the BK11 will be on me every time I go into the field for work. Here's a shot from yesterday's field trip, where I used it to dig a .38 slug out of a power pole to bring home for my kid to play with.

Looks like a nice catch man!

Tell me, why was there a cartridge in the power pole instead of just the bullet? :p :D

Heh, well I picked up a shell from the ground and put the slug back in for Kid3. However, the weird part is that the slug was perfect; not even the tiniest deformity, despite having been punched into a wood pole that's like two feet thick.

You'd almost think that knives were meant for this type of thing. :) Good show bud. I'd like to see someone processing a deer, moose or bear with a Becker. I tried to get a local pork processor to use a Mag Camp and take a hog apart on the line, but the manager frowned on it. I was going to do a bit of a photo shoot. I'll keep an eye out though. I have always believed that knives were primarily for food and fire making.

Awesome catch:) What lake is the northern from?

how is a pike different from pickerel?

i used to catch a lot of pickies as a kid, a lot 2.5 feet or more. good fighters. boney. we didn't eat them much.

Al, the pike came from Upper Lake Mary, at the beach/boatramp/rec area. My coworker caught one just about the same size on Monday up by the spillway, out by the buoys.

As to the wrap, since it's impregnated with epoxy thankfully it don't stink. I was worried about that, but a thorough cleaning seemd to do the trick. I'm not sure I care to tempt fate though and likely won't clean many future fish with it.

I used to catch Pike out of Lake Mormon, though I hear its a mud pit now. I remember them being a whole lota fun to catch!

My 14 had a paracord handle I had to ditch due to smelly paracord a la catfish guts! I love the cord wrapped look and feel, just wish they werent so absorbant!

It seems the "pickerel" = Esox niger, is smaller than Northern Pike = Esox Lucius. But they belong to the same family!!
