I just hacked the registry on a server at work to implant a RAID driver without having to reinstall the whole OS and it worked. 1 terabyte RAID server baby. Plus I won two pints of beer for that in a bet.

Sorry about the geeky post, but I had to gloat a little. Now I'm off to deal with important things like discussing knives online :D
 
good job. Is this software RAID? how many drives and what level RAID? how are the drives attached? Normally RAID arrays are SCSI attached and are initialized prior to the OS loading which confused me a bit because of the registry hack you mentioned. I'm not sharp-shooting...just curious as to what your doing....adding to the geek of this thread. :)
 
It's an Intel Matrix Raid, chipset built into motherboard, using SATA drives. But when Windows Server 2003 was initially installed the raid driver wasn't. So obviously when I changed the RAID settings in the BIOS I got the awful BSOD. Since disk access is required for windows to load and RAID drivers are usually installed during Windows setup, the registry hack allowed me to get windows to boot from the as yet conceived array and then install the Intel Matrix Manager software in windows and mirror the current drive. Nothing fancy just RAID 1, machine functions mostly as a file server but needs to be functioning 100% of the time.

Sure is nice to know there are other geek/knife-lovers around here :D

There is nothing wrong with mirroring. Do you have 1 terabyte total or 2 mirrored 500 Gb drives?

Two 1 TB drives for a total of 1 TB of storage. Its funny, I used to laugh at the acronym RAID, redundant array of inexpensive drives, those SCSI drives where anything but inexpensive. But now I got a 1 TB SATA drive for $189. That seems inexpensive :D

They still are not cheap. Neither is associated hardware needed to make them work. We run several large Storage Area Network devices fiber channel connected between multiple server rooms....brutally expensive and a pain in the ass to set up.
 
I think you are confused. Raid is for cockroaches, ants and other insect infestations.
