Just as I was coming around to enjoy some nice rub marks on my RC-4's black coating, my wife has to come along and give me that 'Oh that knife looks horrible' routine. I know, I'm supposed to simply agree and ignore, but my honour was a little bruised here and I opted to make it shiny.

Here are some pics of the naked RC-4. I left the coating on the tang to maintain its protectivness where my eyes aren't always looking. Hated to see the RAT-logo go, but alas I have another Rat on order and this one is the designated user. Didn't spend a whole lot of effort polishing it and only went to 800 grit.

For those voyeurs out there who wanted to catch a climpse of the new RATs undressed, enjoy!

2nd pic makes it look shinier than it is as it caught the flash.

Nice. Good job strippin' that blade.
I still got a good amount of coating on my Swamp Rat HR. A little more abuse and I'll be sporting a naked blade as well.

Thanks for the pics.

Chris

Looks good. You planning to give it a vinegar bath? Or just going to let it patina over time?

At least she gave you the "that knife looks horrible" routine instead of the "ANOTHER knife? What do you need ANOTHER one for???"

Well you blew it, sir. What better opportunity could you have to buy a new knife? Oh well............

BTW, nice job stripping the blade.

Looks good, kgd!

I think it's true that non-coated blades cut better because there's no resistance from the coating. let us know if you notice any diffeence in performance.

This is an excellent point Doc. The proper married knife guy move in this situation would be to volley for a new knife. Then, once it arrives decide against throwing that old thing away and strip it then.:p

Isn't marriage a blessing.:thumbup::thumbup:;)

Hey Doc - after 9 years of marriage I'm clearly still learning. Usually I can brush off the suggestions like - 'why don't you clean the eves trough today' with a pleasant 'yeah that needs to be done, just gotta take the dogs for a walk'.

Andy - this was sort of the plan. I pre-orderd a RC-6 thinking they would be delivered at the end of April but now it looks like they won't be arriving until the end of May...Oh Well. In essence my wife did buy me the RC-6. She was at a social event and won the 50/50 raffle. She gave me half her take and purchased herself a purse with her half. The deal was we were to both spend the cash on a little personal luxury item.

Brian - I will see if there is a performance difference. Rowan addressed this in another thread suggesting that the smooth coating + flat grind actually improved slicing performance. The blade does feel much smoother uncoated. We will see....

I had hard time stripping my RAT-3. How hard was it for the RC?

I wouldn't say easy but it wasn't all that bad either. I started in the spot that was already warn away and just worked it outwards. The hardest part was the tip - which bit me a couple of times. Also the spine - I couldn't get at between the thumb grooves.

I started with 220 grit wet/dry paper and then progressed to 400 and then 800 grit. It took about 1 hr in total to do.

That came out nice. I usually strip my coated blades after they get some scuffs too.

Whats the easiest way to remove the coating?

There are a bunch of knives I never bought because I do not care for coated blades.

But after seeing this thread, I just might get the credit card out.

Getting some Jasco paint/epoxy remover makes it super easy to remove the coating. Then it's just a matter of sanding with various grits to get the finish you want.

are there any chemicals that would help in the process? My rat 3 has about 1/3 of the finish missing and I would like to strip it all the way down now.

very nice... i like it much better without the black coating.... i'm not a big fan of any kind of coating on a blade....
