I was testing the handle to see if it could bend. something ben but ut was the handle the head bentto the side about 20 degrees. i bent it back but i dont think as highly as i did now knowin it might fail at any time. So please take not if you going into the bush with a cold steel norse hawk that they can fail under normal to hard use. And i wasnt realy pulling the handle to hard. And im a small guy around 5 7 and 130 lbs i had no idea that i could bend it so easily. If i wanted to i think i may have been able to twist the head completly off.

Absolutely, they make tough stuff, if someone doesn't inform them there is a problem, how will they fix it?

I'm really confused about what you were doing... bending the handle? It's hickory, if I'm not mistaken.

I agree, talk to CS. I would guess that the steel was a little too soft.

Why would one need to bend and axe handle? Talk to CS about the head and don't try to be superman and bend the handle again my friend.

I've got a trail hawk, and I am assuming (uh oh!) that they have the same or similar handles. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the steel is going to bend before that handle breaks. FWIW.

Trying to figure out what you mean, what did you bend 20 degrees:
1. entire ax head
2. ax blade

Ok i was seein if there was any flex to the handle why i dont know just to see if ther was any. I will try to explain how it bent If you were holding it verticly with the edge facing away it would look like this sorry i would take pics but i do not have digi cam handy.

I hope this will sufice.

It naturaly bent at it's weakest point. What was holding the blade in place?

The majority of the hawk is not hardened, just the edge. So that would explain why it bent at the... neck?

I wouldn't really worry about it, when the hawk is lodged you move the handle forward and back, not side to side. The fact that it bent, and bent back is reassuring. It would crack.

Well, of course its gonna bend there, silly bean!! Did you have it in a vice and were trying to flex the handle to the side? Crazy head!! I don't call that a fail..... I call it a success! If it had snapped it would have been a fail. CS differentially heat treats the head.... only the first 1.5 inches is hardened.... the rest is tempered back.

Bend good..... Snap bad.

I have used a CS Norse in the bush for years..... and I beat the crap out of it. They are good tools.

Lol, I was waiting on this. I knew what you were going to say as soon as I read the first couple of lines.

Pretty much, yup. It's a learning experience though! Now don't do it again! :D
