I just recieved my back ordered Grizzly grinder yesterday. unpacked and checked the parts against the list and as i was cleaning the packing oils off of everything i noticed a patch on the aluminum area of the 8" drive wheel. it popped right off and showed a flawed casting area, and when i flipped it over the inside of the wheel was cracked about 2/3rds of the way around in 2 places!! of course Grizzly is shipping a replacement, but please check your shipment for this defect as 3600 rpm would have caused it to unload in a big way.

I know i should have bought a KMG , but dont have that much to spend, when i do i will be a happy camper!!
Thanks, George

No worries, every tool has its place. I have two KMGs and still use the Grizzly for some dirty work.

Enjoy and happy grinding. :)

I hope yours is 1725 rpm and not 3600. I can't imagine my old Grizz running at 3600  it was the slower rpm and still plenty fast, too fast for fine work.

Grizzly is good about sending out replacement parts.

Grizzly is a good company and will make it right. Good luck on that.

You American fellas get all the breaks. Grizzly sells good tools, but won't ship to Canada. Why? Well they own or have interest in Busy Bee Tools up here. These guys don't carry a quarter of the stuff that Grizzly does.
Call me envious.

Well, I've had trouble shipping to one place on the planet more than once and both times it was Canada. Perhaps if the customs guys were not such 'sticky fingers' up there people would deal more with you guys. I feel for you. I have backed out of work from guys where you live just for that reason.

As for the grinders. You can have problems with even the real expensive ones too. The main thing is the service and support. On my Kalamazoo grinder, when I bought it new it was shipped without the tilt table. I got one free of charge from them of course. That is a lot of what I look for. Five years later my table turned up missing and guess what. (long story. I took it off and we remodeled and it just disappeared) They shipped a second one at N/C also. That sometimes means more than the price to me. I'll support companies like that 8 days a week.

LOL, and now STR has this weird bump right in the middle of his new carpet...

Yes, i was looking at an old catalog, mine is 1725 rpm. Still wouldnt want to get hit by something travelling that fast!! no problem with Grizzly, just a phone call got that squared away. Just wanted to let people know to watch for this problem with thieir new grinders.
Frank, i live 65 miles from grizzly store if you want to have something shipped, would try to help.
Thanks for all the replies!! George

Thanks for the heads up! I'm one of those that has a grinder on back order.

Working on a budget has caused me to buy alot of Grizzly products. Its always the same, a good idea cheaply made. I've had to fix or modify Every single Grizzly machine I've purchased (this grinder makes 5). I can always make it work out, but it can be a little frustrating.

This is one of the issues that didn't come out when I was talking about the Griz I had on back order. This is an important point for someone wanting to invest in a tool, whether they will use it for a hobby or for business. You can either spend your time working on tools or making knives. It's an overused cliche but I'm going to use it anyway: You have to spend money to make money. There...I said it.:D

In a perfect world we'd all buy the very best and money would be no object. In reality, family comes first. Two sets of braces, a million things the kids need, a new roof on the garage... You know the drill, or if you're reading this and not married yet, you'll learn it fast.

If you're doing this as a sole form of income, yea, bite the bullet, time is money, and you don't need the headaches. If its a part time business and/or mostly hobbie, you get what fits in the family's budget. Gotta keep it all in perspective man.
(BTW all my tools, the ones I use to make a living, say Fluke, Starrett, Browne and Sharp, Snap-On, and Craftsman)

I would have really liked to have been able to get a Bridgeport. Money, and space ment getting a smaller machine. The Grizzly mill I purchaced a few months ago ins doing a great job. The only complaint- a touch too fast at the lowest speed. Mike

Mike, I've been looking at the same mill for the same reasons. How is the accuracy, repeatability, and backlash on this machine? Any probs in the setup of it? Can you give me a quick review here pm or email?
Thanks for your time,
Scott

Hi Scott! I was leary of the machine, so I went to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/6x26millingmachines/ To see what I could find out. It is a wealth of Info. That and I called my old buddy Kit Carson. Bottom line is that it is a very well finished machine. I'm enjoying the accuracy, and repeatability. something I never had with my larger Mill,Drill. The machine is smooth, and quite. Over-all, surprisingly well made. There are several machines on the market that look the same, but the quality just isn't there. So far, I can repeat within one half thou, after dropping the nee. Mike
