Just a general heads up to the dealers out there as we have quite a few forumites in the greater Los Angeles area. If you're shipping a product to a commercial address in the L.A. area, I'd recommend against using UPS. For those who aren't aware, there is a fairly large janitorial strike in effect out here, and the UPS drivers (teamsters) have decided on a show of solidarity with their janitorial brethren. They are simply refusing to deliver packages to any commercial address whose building management has not reached agreement regardless of who the building's tenants are. This is effective immediately. As far as I know our own Asian Janitorial Apparatus has maintained his neutrality thus far into the conflict

I find this interesting. I would think that any UPS man refusing to deliver a package would be immediatly fired and the teamsters
encouraging such action would be sued by UPS and lose big time. The days for honoring others picket lines and wildcat strikes seems to be in the past.

thanks for the tip-off. As a union supervisor for the NY Daily News I know how important it is for solidarity.
Now before you guys against unions start a flame war, just try to understand that in certain fields of work they are neccessary.
Take these janitors, for instance. Think they'd get a decent salary or medical benefits for their families without a union?
So, if you're happy in your work and satisfied with all the trappings, remember some still need them. And try not to judge all by the few bad or crooked ones that always seem to get the media attention.

Lifter, your point is well taken and I don't mean to delve into the politics behind the issue. I would be lying, however, if I said that the way UPS has chosen to handle this situation isn't leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I just want to make sure our fellow forum members are protected to the max extent possible. This happened to my brother yesterday, so we have a little first hand experience with the issue.
The biggest problem for us, the little guys, is that UPS is doing nothing to inform it's customers of their refusal to deliver. Our packages are being loaded into the trucks and then the drivers are simply treating these packages as if they were "undeliverable to the current address". As I understand it, with most of these delivery services (UPS, Fedex, etc.) they will normally attempt delivery twice and then the package is returned to whence it came. If my bro hadn't been on the ball and tracking his package via the UPS website, his package could have been sent back to the shipper and he may never have even known that the package was here. Again, I'm all for solidarity, but I also know how much we all look forward to getting our knives (and how much we hate unecessary delays). FYI, as far as I know, Fedex deliveries have been unaffected by this.

thanks for the heads up on this issue.
i ship on a regular basis to the that particular area so that is info i feel we all need to know. thanks again.

good as the best and better then the rest.

Hmm, perhaps if UPS management and the accounting department would make a show of unity with the customers of UPS, and simply refuse to print the pay-checks for the offending drivers, that would change the tune pretty quick. Guess I better stop now before I really start in about how I feel about unions

Knife shippers are now duly warned to check with Rumor Control before shipping by UPS to Los Angeles office building addresses while the janitors' labor dispute is in progress. Discussion of the merits of the labor dispute and related tactics may continue in the Community forum.

Does anybody want to start a new thread on what kind of work knife works best for janitors? Besides ye olde Stanley utility box cutter?
