After 3 days of hard work just gone for nothing. A 25 cm (10 inch) D2 Chef's knife is now garbage. After HT it came out with a wavy edge. It is impossible to fix..
All my work was gone because I was worried about the eaten belts by D2 blades. I tried to finish the bevel while it was annealed. But the bevel was from edge to spine, covering all the blade, making a thin and light knife. Finishing the blade to 90 % before HT is some times the worst thing you can do. If the blade section is thin or hollow ground the chance of warp flies...

BUT you know all these stuff. So what I am talking about?

Just wanted to cry on someone's sholder... All the work was gone and all I have is a wavy knife. :o

So you stock remove?- if you forge (you could use your ht forge if it gets hot enough), you may be able to recycle it. Sorry to hear about that. I guess that I'll just keep a coolant by my grinder if pre ht grinding is that bad.

I forge them first to the thickness. I have 30 X 6 mm bar stock the knife is 2 mm. The edge is somewhat forged also. But I changed my mind and I end up grinding a full flat bevel. Before I wanted to make it convex then I thought a crisp flat would be perfect. I didnt overheat while grinding I am sure. Constant dipping to water, never used a dull belt etc.. I hoped it wont warp if I pre grind it just like finished, but it did. I will reforge the blade, but the profile will not be the same after forging. It will loose some metal after final grinding. Making the width narrower. It is not good because it was made by the customer's wish. I will have to make it again. I'm sure i will be afraid to pre-grind and after HT I know D2 will resist to grind much.

Ouch! How long do you have on the order? Anyway, good luck on getting another one finished.

bladsmth , Lol :) ....

I was thinking, D2 steel is too much for a novice. I was using it to make kitchen knives. I will give up kitchenware & D2: back to 5160 and my big & hard working blades. I hate D2, may be i will used to it some other time.....

I JUST GIVE UP!

ps: I dont have any computerised kilns or pyrometers etc. Just a propane forge, a magnet and my eyes to see color. I think its not enough.

Lovely 5160, come to meee....

Been there, Done that, Burned the T shirt.
I feel for you. One of the prettiest hunting sword blades I ever forged came out of HT as the sword that could cut around corners :o

5160 is the king of steel.... :p

Peter, gib, everyone reading and feeling for me, thanks a lot, for beeing there when i needed someone to complain. To the people in this town, what i do is alchemy; I am bored to trying to tell what is steel and why is one steel is good for this purpose, i.e. I say "D2 will be good for your chef's knife because it will hold an edge that you didnt see at manifactured blades" and he asks "why it is priced higher" and I say "I will work hard, steel is expensive and it will eat my belts." Then everybody asks "Will it rust?". :o Thats the main problem with ordinary folk. They think a good knife must be stainless. I couldnt explain them the functionality is the main problem after all. Yes if it doesnt rust it will be nicer, but D2 will rust if you dont maintain. Any stainless steel that wil make a decent blade is far more expensive and impossible to HT by me. I may send to HT but it just doesnt sound right to me. I have to forge, grind, HT, polish, furnish etc. the knife. At the end I am the artist here and i want to be able to control and attend every step of creation of a blade. I say "thousands of years man used their knife as a part of their hand and protected it from rust." I guess the world lost their patience and respect to their tools in previous century.

Any suggestion will be appreciated of how to explain my situation to customer.

Also, this morning I went to my forge and HT another blade of D2 pre-profiled and annealed last night. No way. This was also failure. Soaked at critical 20 min and air cool, then 3 cycles of temper. No way. It chips on the edge. It is back and mid portion is soft just as it was annealed. I cant control D2. I am exhausted and embarrassed. This week is the worst week in my life because of D2 and my primitive HT tools. Steel says to me: "no even heat no decent blade". Then I say " I am sorry, I have to leave you, and return to my previous love - 5160". :( :)

sorry to here that man. if i, for some reason, decide to head over to turkey, i'll help you with your alchemey over there. Can you get an oven over there with an electronic monitering system?

Golly, I've been concerned about you and the D2. I recently did my first D2 blade, and fell in love with the stuff. Maybe everything just fell into place for me this one time, and I'll have hell with it from now on?? I'll try some more later this week. You can't take the warp out by annealing? I'm did something right I guess, and I don't know what it was.
