I was routing through my drawers of knife stuff & came across some alternative ivory

2 pieces

1/8" x 4 x 4" that I paid $50 for.

It was stored inside the house, no weather extremes

It's warped
The corners lifted maybe 1/4"

Is this normal for this material?
Can it be straightened & would it stay straight?
How can this be usable on knives?

Can it ever be usable, or is this $50 that I can flush?:grumpy:

& avoid this stuff in the future

Clamp it flat, and apply gentle heat. Maybe put it under a light bulb for a few hours. Let it cool while clamped.

That is what I had in mind.

Is it going to stay straight and not warp again with just epoxy holding it down?

It's too thin for any real mechanical fasteners.

It can be pinned. I don't recommend "just epoxy" for anything. It can warp again.

All my folder scales are screwed down and they are all less than 1/4".

Warming it and clamping it flat may or may not work. Before you try that, contact the seller and ask for advise. Most reputable suppliers will replace it.

Synthetic ivory is a plastic, and as the various chemicals in plastics dry out , it can warp and crack. Heat is the biggest enemy, as it greatly increases surface evaporation. Look at the dash board on an old car.
