Is there anything wrong with having a warped blade on my zdp calypso? Is this a factory defect?

Assuming it is not so severe that it interferes with the opening and closing, I'd rate it as a known cosmetic issue, rather than a defect. It as been reported for every version of the Calypso Jr. with the possible exception of the all stainless one and for the C54 Calypso as well. Not all specimens of any version are warped, by any means, but some of each type are. If you go back to last summer's posts, you will see some concerning this issue in the ZDP-189 version. Go back a year or so prior to that and you will see quite a few noting it in the grey FRN VG-10 version, and if you go back far enough, you'll see the same reports about the original C52 in FRN and micarta, and the C54.

It can't be repaired, and I doubt if Spyderco has any more of them to replace it with.

I was under the impression a mild warping could be repaired via hydraulic press (put blade between two blocks, apply a bit of pressure to the middle till a set takes).

This is too weird. I just got one in grey FRN VG-10 on trade, and I see what you mean. When I eye-ball the spine, from the top of the thumbrest toward the point, I see a gentle bias to the right. When closed, the LH side of the blade hugs the inside of the LH scale, which doesn't make sense. I would think it would want to hug the RH scale.

In any case, I don't think the blade is warped. I put each side flat down on my desk and tried to detect any rocking or wiggle. There is none. I think its alignment is off at the lock-bar. Perhaps the pivot-pin hole was drilled slightly off-kilter?

Since I didn't even notice it until this thread, I guess I can't complain.:o

The warping sometimes seen occurs during heat treat. I wonder if there is something about the shape and distal taper that makes the Caly Jr blade vulnerable.

Warping can occur also during machining, if material is not stress relived.
