Warranty question for refinishing a ZT

Finally was able to pick up a ZT 0801 and it should be here by Monday. To say that I am excited about it would be an understatement.

Question for the ZT folks, I am thinking of bead blasting the pocket clip and screws / pivot on the outside to make it all silver like the Prototype that I handled at SHOT show. The screws will only be refinished on the outside. Will this void my warranty? If so I think I will find a silver pocket clip to fit and leave it as is.

Thanks in advance for any info and a big thanks to ZT and Rexford for making such a sweet knife.

I don't really see why it would, but I'd check with ZT to make sure. It might hurt the resale value though.

Ditto.

There was a related exchange of posts...

Are there silver pocket clips available :o?

Plus silver/chrome screws including pivot. I think it'll do wonders for the aesthetics but then again it'd be nice to see one beforehand.

There is no silver hardware available right now, but it wouldn't take much to bead blast the hardware silver. I can't endorse this, but if one chose to ignore my advice, one could essentially remove the screws, stick them through a piece of cardboard to hold them, and bead blast them.

One could even theoretically turn polish the pivot hardware with a drill and some sandpaper. Not that I've ever done such a thing....

Here are the ZT 0801 and Kershaw Dimension 3810 both with full titanium scales. So, which looks better black or silver screws/pivot albeit it's somewhat subjective? No pictures of the reverse side for either (Dimension isn't out yet).

The long and the short of it is that we do not recommend modifying your ZT knife, but we know it happens. The thing we take issue with is when someone modifies a knife, realizes that their "pimping" caused the knife to malfunction, and then wants us to repair it.

Bead blasting your hardware is probably not a big deal.

On on the other hand, milling out the inside of your handles to install IKBS in a knife that originally had flat bronze washers? Proceed at your own risk, 'cuz the warranty department isn't likely to help you if you screw it up.

Jimmer: If the mods are a genuine improvement do we get a commission? Nah, I didn't think so. :(

Regarding the (what I think is) excessive travel on the lock on my 561 is it possible that rotating the "thumb" stud a little might help? It's basically a blade stop, right? Just wondering...

I used my Silver Metallic Sharpie to one side of the 0801 and it looked much better. It would be even better if I had a color matching the titanium handle because my sharpie is too silvery!

I had to erase it quickly with alcohol before it gets too tough to remove from the ridges.

By the way, I noticed also that the SHOT Show 0801 had a much more pronounced 3D "ZERO TOLERANCE" embedded into that scale. I'm guessing that and the lack of silvery screws, pivot and clip are just cost-savings.

FYI, pick up a Tub O' Towels. It eats up permanent marker and doesn't damage plastics. I use it for everything, including removing the "please don't sharpen" mark on my blades when I send them in for repair.

Thanks. Which flavor of Tub O' Towels: General Purpose or Stainless Steel?

The regular gen. purpose ones are good. Yellow and black tub. They're also good degreasing wipes.

Ordered a Wonder Works Tub O'Towels (40 Towel Canister) in the yellow & black tubs.

  • Removes stains others won't including: grease, tar, ink, paint, permanent marker and other hard-to-remove soils
  • Gentle on hands
  • Contains lanolin, aloe vera and vitamin E
  • Kills germs
  • No water necessary

Grazie Signore.

I think it would have taken forever to machine that level detail into every knife that goes out, the CNC would have to go slow and use very tiny bits. The custom makers wait hours for detail like that. Just to cost prohibited.

I thought I was the only one thwt wrote on their blades when sending a knife in.
