Warranty Question, Re: Self-defense

I posted this in other forums because there's no way to get it to every manufacturer in just one post. Here's my question...

Let's say Ichabod (my hypothetical guy) bought a knife that was designed for self-defense. Spyderco Civilian, Kershaw Steven Segall, Benchmade 710, Boker CLB line, whatever. It was designed for self-defense, whatever the model is.

Now let's say Ichabod uses the knife for self-defense and the blade tip snaps. He gets away from the bad guy and police arrive.

What will the knife manufacturer do if Ichabod sends the knife in for warranty work with a copy of the police report and a statement to the effect of "...had to use it for self-defense and the tip snapped..." ?

If the knife was made for self-defense and was used in that manner, then it's not considered abuse. Therefore, it should be covered by warranty, right?

For now, I'd like to focus on the warranty issue and not worry about the other variables of the case. Yes, the police will have shown up and confiscated Ichabod's knife. Yes, there will be a trial. Yes, he'll get it back if he's found not guilty. Yes, he has bigger things to worry about than getting a knife repaired. But can we look at the issue at hand for now?

Please discuss.

If it was marketed and advertised as a self-defense knife then sure it should be covered by warranty.

It's one thing to be designed as a knife for self-defense and another to explicitly state and market it as one.

Spyderco would probably give you a new knife because their customer service is awesome like that, however they're under no legal obligation too (the Civilian for example says the tip may break). In fact, I think that legally no company is bound to replace/repair your knife. However, knowing the service most companies provide, I doubt they would not repair/replace it...then feature it in their next catalog.

We will take care of any warranty defects.
If the tip is broken, and we can rehsarpen it, we'll do it.
If it is a hardening problem, we'll replace it. But in this case, we have to examine the knife first!

I hope, "Ichabod" will never come into a situation, he will need a knife to defend his life.

I think in questions of self defense, nowadays very few companies would really state the knife as self defense intended, rather as more of them could tell, suitable for SD as well. You have to realize a knife marketed as a dedicated self defense product could be considered as a more offensive subject in a possible court trial in case this would possibly occur. I remember that was a reason Spyderco took the signs MILITARY and POLICE off their blades.

Interesting...

JN, I am gonna have to agree that IF a knife was designated SPECIFICALLY for SD, then it should be covered.

Be safe and God bless!

Warranty...? Man if you go through that, you won't care.

This is what I thought initially!
If I would be still alive, I would put it into a dispay case, lock it up and get another one...

But, we would certainly take care of any "warranty" defects...
