Hello every I'm new to forum, but i'm loving it!!! Great resource for all things blades.

So I have a CRKT M16 Tanto blade with serations. I've had this knife for about 6 years I would say. Well a few years ago the tip broke off from general use, I wasn't doing anything crazy with it. And so I never thought twice about it. Then I started researching new knives and checking out this forum and thought I should see if CRKT can do something for me. I emailed them and they said yes send it in and they will replace it. Well then I thought are they just going to replace the blade, or maybe shave the blade down to give it a tip or would they really just give me a new one? I sent those question back to them as well as asking if there was going to be any fee's other than the shipping cost. You know labor, shop fees, etc etc if they do just fix it. My question is

has anyone sent a knife back with the same issues and what happened? Did you get a new knife or did you get a new blade and stuck with fee's? etc etc.

I'm a little attached to the knife since it was my first real knife other than the various SAK's i've had and still own.

Thank You,

First time poster,

Jimmy

I don't know about CRKT, but Benchmade will replace a blade if they have it, and if not give you credit for the full purchase price of the knife toward a new knife. If they give you credit, they keep the knife. If the knife has real sentimental value, I would just look at replacing it with something else. There are many fine knives from many manufacturers in the same price range.

Oh and as far as the fees, I don't recall that I had to pay anything when it was a warranty issue. When I had them re-sharpen a knife it was like $5 for return shipping, but under warranty, $0. Again, that was Benchmade though...

If it's CRKT I'm afraid they will probably give you a brand new M16 as it's still in production. Which...for most people unfortunately or fortunately would be overjoyed with. They are a really spectacular group those people in their Customer Service area.

***But that's only a guess. If you are sentimental about the knife, email them again. I've always gotten an email response back within 24 hours. Not that I have had to call them very often, I've purchased maybe 6 of their knives in the past 7 months or so. Gifted three of them and I still own one which I fubar'ed myself, which I told them about and they promptly sent out the washers that I had bent in a Drifter after disassembling it.

Interesting, because my recollection of the CRKT warranty is that they specifically state that if you snap off the tip of your blade you must have been prying with it or something else abusive, therefore you are SOL. Maybe the policy has changed since then. I'll be interested to see how this turns out.

ETA, copied from the CRKT website:

THE CRKT LIMITED LIFETIME KNIFE WARRANTY.
This warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship. If one of our knives ever breaks or fails because of material or manufacturing defect, we’ll replace the knife.

This warranty runs as long as you own your knife. Coverage ends if you sell or otherwise transfer the knife to someone else, or if your CRKT knife is modified in any way.

This warranty does not cover breakage or failure due to misuse of the knife. Knives as good as ours rarely break or fail because of a defect. Usually they break or fail from what we call “tool abuse”—using them for unsuitable tasks like prying or pounding. Therefore, blade tip breakage is not covered by our warranty. Use of a knife for any purpose other than cutting voids the warranty. (The exceptions to this caution are the A.B.C. Aqua and MAK-1 Multiple Access Knife which have tips designed specifically for prying.) So please match the tool to the task, and use your knife only for cutting. The knife will last longer, and you’ll be safer too. This warranty does not cover failure of mechanisms due to your failure to properly maintain them.

Also, consequential and incidental damages are not recoverable under this warranty. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of consequential damages, so this exclusion or limitation may not apply to you.

Misuse of your knife can cause serious injury or even death. It can also cause your knife to break or fail and the CRKT limited lifetime warranty will not apply. Failure to properly maintain your knife also may cause its mechanisms to not function properly, which could result in injury to you or damage to the knife. Follow the do’s and don’ts which are included in your CRKT knife package and the knife will last longer and you’ll be safer too.

Yes,
I was a little surprised myself. But mine didn't break from prying anything open. I knew better since that would probably be a bad idea. It happened while I was in the Marine Corps. As for being attachted to it, it never crossed my mind until just yesterday when I got the reply back from CRKT about sending it in.

I would suggest emailing them again to find out for sure if it would be covered and if so, would they replace the blade or the knife. Tell them you carried it while in the Marines on deployment or wherever you may have been. Many companies are happy that a soldier chooses to carry thier product for the ultimate real world testing. Even if you may have been a REMF it was the blade that you chose to carry while serving this great country of ours. Thanks for your service!

Thank You jjoanty01. I did email them back asking about all the possible options. New vs just getting the old one fixed, fee's, etc etc just waiting to hear back. I also told them that it happened while I was in the Marine Corps, I think that might be why they said they would replace it. Either way, we'll see what they respond with.

Thanks for the input all and i'll keep updating to let you know what happens.

How bad is the break? If it's a small break, you could easily use sandpaper and sharpening stones to grind the back of the blade down, "drop" the point to meet the break.

I've broken the tips off of several knives, all it takes is one fall onto concrete while open, so I no longer buy coated blades. That way when I have to drop the tip it doesn't look all scuffed up.

MatthewSB here is a pic of the tip.

also here is the reply i got back from them:

"It would be a new knife that we would send out. The only thing you are responsible for is the cost to ship it to us. We take care of all the costs after that, no surprises. It’s on us."

I can't see the photo but its a tanto tip right you can fix that yourself no sweat!

Oh man did the picture thing not work? How do I get pics into here?

Yes it's the tanto, i'm not sure i have the gear or skill to fix it. Plus mine has a lot of blade play and seems to stick when trying to open. I don't know if I lost something out of the bearing mechanism that opens and closes it. I tried to adjust it one time and it's not been the same since.

Hello all, just wanted to send an update. So i was finally able to send my knife off this week. It should be there by friday and they told me 7-10 days turnaround time. I really hope that they send me the new model I asked for and that it's within the time frame they said. I'm really excited to get a brand new knife for just $5 for the shipping. If this works out i will be very impressed with CRKT's customer service and will always consdier their knives because of it. I will let you know how it ends.

thank you

I just keep my sentimental pieces with the damages. That's more sentimental I think...

100eyes I agree with you and i called my dad before i sent the knife off. And he said why would i know take advantage of the warranty plan to get a new knife, that's what it's there for. Then i told him when and how i got the knife and he said not to be hung up on that part of it. It was knife i picked out not knowing hardly anything about knives with a giftcard i got for my birthday. I didn't use the gift card until like 6 months later as well. Yeah it might have been nice to keep that knife, but i have way more sentimental items that i've gotten from my parents or friends that i'll never part with. Just my thoughts.
