Warranty question

Just want you guys opinion on this.

The clip on my Sptdiechef got snagged and instead of just bending the clip it popped/stripped the screw... which no longer threads on.

I sent it in for warranty, in which they say is on me and are asking $20 to repair. What is your thoughts? Should this be on me? I personally don't feel good about their response, considering how much I've invested in their products collectively.

I plan on calling to see exactly what their plan on 'repair' is, because other than going up a size on thread I can't see a solid solution... and then even if they went up a size it seems like it would not fit between the clip tabs.

I’m not sure if that’s something they should cover under warranty or not. My first thought is no because, although it was an accident, it was improperly used. However, my brother-in-laws lightweight chaparral had this exact same thing happen to it so now I’m wondering if maybe there is a bigger issue at hand. He can no longer use the pocket clip so he doesn’t carry the knife anymore.

That's a bummer, but I don't think it's a warranty issue. I am also curious about the fix. I hope you get it resolved without too much difficulty.

Yeah, I'm more than willing to have them repair it for $20, but worried that this will likely happen again. The fact it replies on a single TINY screw seems inevitable it will happen again.

I like to use the truck analogy here.

If you buy a new truck and they didn't weld the hinges on right and the doors fall off or they put the wrong kind of oil in the engine or they forget to paint the frame that would be a warranty.

If you take your truck and hit a deer, or hook up the battery backwards, or tear off a bumper reversing over a tree stump that's not a warranty. Even though those are all things some people would say those are all "normal" things that Ford should expect a truck to handle.

Seems more like a freak incident to me. I've carried my Chef for the past year without any problems.

There are also lots of other Chefs in the wild and I haven't heard of any similar reports. I have heard of bent clips tho.

I am likely getting this repaired... So as long is it's a solid repair.
Not trying to degrade them or their services, it's just that I've snagged clips on almost all my knives and the worst case was the clip bent, in which I removed and straightened out.
I will say though, this makes me think twice about any future purchases. Couldn't imagine having a serious issue and relying on their warranty.

Bending the clip and stripping out the mounting screw(s) is an act of negligence on your part and not something that should be covered under the mfg's warranty IMO.

$20 is a small price to pay for the repair.

Just how bent up was the clip? I have bent the clips on both of my Slysz Spyderco knives, I even think I used a real good amount of force but the screw never popped out. I would have to think you really gave it some weight to be able to strip the screw.

I "think" those clip screws are different length. One of them sits recessed into the handle and is shorter. The one holding the clip is longer as it's not recessed.
From Shabazz disassembly video (he didn't remove these for disassembly), but they look flush on the inside with the scales.
It's a screw as big as a pivot screw in the knife, it's far from being weak.

+1

Guy at work snagged his clip on the linen bag and pulled the threaded insert out of competitors folding knife handle - wasn't a free repair. I think it was actually $30-$40 for the new scale.
