So I own the 535 Bugout and 940 Osborne and love both of them. I'm looking at the new OTF coming out, the 4850 Om for my next Benchmade knife. I know some knife manufacturers for OTFs like Microtech ban sharpening them yourself and will void your warranty if you do so. Instead they require you to send the knife back to allow them to sharpen them. Does Benchmade's warranty prohibit sharpening their OTFs or are you allowed to sharpen your own knife?

Microtech's warranty doesn't ban sharpening, it says "improper" sharpening will void the warranty. Basically they're saying don't try to sharpen it with an angle grinder or something equally stupid.

Benchmade's warranty is great, and they'll go above and beyond to fix your knife, but I don't have a high opinion of their warranty department's sharpening skills. In the same vein as Microtech, or any other company for that matter, if you butcher your blade by not sharpening it the proper way, they'll charge you to fix your screw up.

Nobody can ban you from sharpening your own knife. Just sharpen it yourself.
