I've got one quick question:

If I go ahead and *carefully* try to grind a short false edge on my Basic 9, will it void the lifetime warranty? Any info would be appreciated!

Antdog,
Here is Busse's warranty.

What kind of Warranty covers the knife?
The warranty explained by Jerry Busse:
"Busse Combat is proud to have the toughest warranty in the industry. Busse Combat Grade, Combat Basics, and Combat Customs are guaranteed for life against any and all MAJOR damage.

We have been asked recently how modifications of our knives might affect our warranty. Modifications can change the very nature and authorship of a knife. Simply put, we cannot warrant workmanship that we do not perform. Specifically, if you have modifications done to your knife, outside of our shop, and the modifications adversely affect the integrity and/or performance of your knife, causing it to fail, then it should be noted that "OUR" warranty will not cover "YOUR" modifications. We will, however, continue to cover the parts of your knife that are left unaffected by your modification. For example: If you have mastodon ivory grips put on your Steel Heart II by someone outside of our shop, then our warranty will continue to cover everything except the ivory grips. So be careful. BEFORE you have any modifications done to your knife, make sure that the person doing the modification will guarantee their workmanship. Busse Combat encourages extreme usage of our blades as they are without question "The Toughest Knives in the World".
We have no rivals. You can use a Busse Combat knife as hard as you like and our warranty has you covered."

"We are, likewise, the only manufacturer who guarantees our knives to ANY owner. You do not have to keep your receipt, or any of that other nonsense that is designed to frustrate the customer and make it difficult to make a warranty claim.

Got a problem? We'll fix it! We have never, ever had an unsatisfied customer with a warranty issue."

The way I read it, yes it would void the warranty.

I'm in agreement with Chip.

I think any modification that isn't done by the shop can cause you problems.

But as far as I know the shop WON'T do it (since it has been heat treated). I'm not even going to try to do it since it will void the lifetime warranty - that's one of the best things about the knife! Oh well, it was worth asking. Thanks for the info guys.

Here's the best way to get what you want. Call Marc, get a design and have Jerry make you a custom.

Next question?

AFAIK, taking a belt to the Busse after heat treat would have adverse effects if it was done in a poor enough manner in which the steel is overheated enough to ruin the original localized temper.

Heck, call Marc and see if the gang at Busse can do it for you?

Thanks for the advice guys, but if I ordered a custom I think the rest my family would be a little upset with me. I don't think they want to eat nothing but macaroni and cheese for the rest of the year! :p

But seriously, I mean to USE this knife and if I paid as much as the customs usually run, I'd never use it. The Basic 9 is GREAT without the false edge but I think it would "poke things" much better with one. I've alreay beat the crap out of mine so much that if I got another one it might get jealous! I'm afraid I'll just have to pass on a custom and keep the 9 the way it is. Thanks for the replies though.

Hey - maybe I could get a swamp rat battle rat made with a false edge! I didn't think of that being an option - who would I contact about that? Eric or Marc or Jerry or Jennifer or? Are custom rats an option?

Sorry, Custom Rats aren't an option.

However, you mention you want the false edge to "poke things much better" Check out the Military or Penetrator tip that we offered for this first batch of Camp Tramps and Battle Rats. It will "poke" pretty good ;):D:D

That tip profile looks to offer a rather large increase in penetration with a small decrease in strength, a fairly innovative design.

Yea, I've got the penetrator tip on my Battle Mistress and it's awesome. :)
