Hello all. I am trying to find a SH Satin Jack. It is not easy. My question is, if I were to buy one with a coated blade, and then sand or strip off the coating, would I be able to send it back to have the handle put back on? I really want a satin finish on the blade. I know the warranty is out of this world, but I don't know about something like this. Would this seem like it could be possible? or would i just end up with a satin blade and no handles? thanks for your help.

The easy answer is to email Garth or Amy and see when you can send it in etc. :)

There are many people here who have simply bolted the handles back on. There are a number of threads on exactly which bolts they used if you can search.

Probably an easier way if you are going to "satinize" it yourself.

Well, i really like the look of the rivets. Also, i called the site phone, and the woman there was very nice but said she did not know if it would be covered or not.

Occassionally the custom shop will satinize a coated blade but generally they'll only recoat in the color of your choice for a nominal fee. You can do the handle reattach yourself with 1/4" tubing, a vice, 2 phillips bits and 2 dry wall screw heads--as told in one of the tutorials.

I'm sure they can put scales back on for you, but I would not expect it to be warranty work, you'll have to pay for Shop time. AFAIK, only Garth can quote that.

Yes, it is possible to do it yourself, but I think you need a press or a big vise.

DWeglarz,

I sent in a coated knife and had them take take off the slabs, satinize the knife, and put new slabs on. It took less than two weeks and the price was VERY good. PM me if you want details.

this one was stripped with the handles on, I have not seen a problem with doing it that way...

If you strip the coating and sand your knife just be careful not to overhead the edge and mess up the temper. If you mess up the temper that it is not covered.

Wow, those pics are just what I want. Is there a special kind of stripper you used for that? and how, just submerge the whole knife into a tub of that stripper with the handles on it? thanks, i appreciate the help.

i just bought paint stripper in a can from the hardware store, brushed it on, waited, washed it off, did a little sanding(not much), them convexed the edge on the belt sander. If it is cool enough to hold, you have no worries about ruining the temper.

oh, and putting the knife in the liquid, will that ruin the strength of whatever epoxy/adhesive is under the handle slabs? thanks

You do NOT need to take the handle off to strip it... I did it.... but then again I'm nuts.

Here is the stripper I use. It's less expensive than the other type. ;)
