I tried a search and was unable to answer my question which is: if I take apart my Buck 172 Mayo TNT to clean it up does this invalidate my warranty?

Thanks.

Yep...you buy the land, you get the indians.
You take that apart, that's it (technically).

From the ubiquitous green sheet included with each Buck:

"...dismantling or tampering...voids your warranty coverage."

Your mileage may vary...

Is it really so dirty that you have to take it apart? Or has some OCD thing kicked in? :D

Lot of ways to clean it without the need to take it apart. Can't take a 110 apart but it cleans up ok.

jest curious........

Having put together a number of these, the TNT is a pain to take apart because you need to put a wrench on each side to you can hold both screws at once. What is the problem with it?

The purpose for the "don't take it apart" clause in most warranties is to keep customers who are not mechanically inclined from creating problems by taking the knife apart and re-assembling it incorrectly. For example, if you took apart a Buck spring assist like a Rush or Sirus, you would probably struggle to get Humpty-Dumpty back together again.

Technically it does void the waranty. However, if you buggered it up and sent it in, we would put it back together for you no charge. Having said that though, for the reasons mentioned in the other posts, its best not to take it apart. Spraying it out with WD, and then high pressure air, then oiling it usually takes care of things.

In regards to the spring assist knives...  I dont know how many zip lock bags I have gotten with those knives inside, all apart. Guys like us just have to know how they are made and once apart, you are not going to get one of those knives back together agian. As my rework man once told me, " I use an assembly jig and it is still very hard to do!"
