I posted this in "Reviews and Testing" with no luck, hope to do better here! I'm referring to the carbon fiber and titanium blades with the carbide coated edge.

Has anyone used one of these? Are they designed to be strictly self-defense? I saw some at the Pasadena show and they definitely got me interested- extremely light and amazingly sharp- and they look cool too! (I like carbon fiber)

They are for extremely low profile, last ditch defensive use. A fine knife indeed. Warren makes a fine and very unique product. This is a fine piece of equipment! keep it away from the back yard demolition derby testers.

MVF---I've emailed Warren Thomas Knives three times and have not been answered. So, I bought a Busse Game Warden. I'm still interested in his knives. Bad C.S. lost him a sale. Post if you make head-way.

Bad CS would be not supporting a product after it's been sold.

Not replying to email inquiries could be his spam filter trapping your emails.

Let's not jump to conclusions. Warren is pretty active on other forums and has a loyal customer base for a reason.

Ive owned a few WT knives. Still have a bali by him. Very nice knives, great fit and finish, and very light as you said. Nice SD knife but for survival or EDC i would go with something different. What are you looking to do with it?? Hard use, EDC, SD, utility, or safe queen??

WT makes interesting blades, I have 2 and like them both.
They are good cutters but the carbide edge is like a micro saw so they wont shave you but they could probably cut your bones ! I do find them a bit light weight to have much confidence in them but im sure that is just in the head and in reality their fine.
The other thing i find is the edge is pretty thin and the carbide is silly hard so chipping is another thing that is a concern for me.
The 2 i have dont see much action at all but as i say they are interesting blades and i like them

Haze---Could you post some pics? If not, what models do you have and I'll look them up. Thanks.

What, no hammering through a steel pipe?

Thanks Haze, can you tell us what kind of use you've put them to?

Mostly the novelty appeals to me as I had some thoughts along these lines a while back- idle daydreaming never followed up on. I probably have to have one just because, but knowing more about them would sure help me decide which one to get.

I wonder about the carbide layer- is it a coating? bonded? I assume it wouldn't be too susceptible to wear, but does it come off? How well do they handle lateral loads- the ones I saw were obviously not made for prying, but how likely is the titanium to delaminate from the carbon fiber?

The edges and points are so thin I really wondered about durability, but then both titanium and carbon fiber are known for their strength, so...?? Between the thinness and the extremely aggressive feel of the carbides, I have no doubt about it being an excellent "anti-personnel" weapon, I'm just wondering how limited it is beyond that. I don't want to spend that kind of money and then ruin it the first day, but I know I would just have to cut something with that edge!

Here is one I picked up last year....non user...but would make a great defense knife if you were jogging and needed something that wouldn't pull your shorts off.:D

Lycosa, you're not the only one. I've asked WT questions before, and it has gone unanswered. And it's not spam filters. That's one reason I shy away from buying his stuff. When I asked whether ti / CF would set off magnometers (the airport thing) and he brushed off the question by saying he could not discuss such things etc. I mean if you make such knives, then why the enigma? I was just trying to find out more. I don't buy into mystique, sorry.

I like his rhino folder tho'.

It's entirely understandable to me why Warren would refuse to answer your magnetometer question. Should he expose himself to some all kinds of legal trouble just to satisfy someone's curiosity about what the US gov't would classify as terrorist-like behavior?

what legal trouble? "terrorist"? that's stretching it. it's just a question from a knifeknut. YMMV.

Of course if he answered that question, the next question would logically be "How do you know?"

Also, if I was building knives that could beat a metal detector, I don't think I'd want to be on record saying so.

The way to find the answer (without the Homeland Security risk) would be to take something else made of titanium through the metal detector. Regardless, I sure would not want to be the one caught with one of his knives going through a checkpoint- too big to say you "forgot you had it" and too nasty to say you just use it to clean your fingernails!

It's actually not stretching... It's called liability, and you can be sure that the gov't will go after the manufacturer if it's advertised or recommended as being capable of defeating gov't restrictions. Similar to Cold Steel's plastic knives - they'll cut you just as quick and they aren't picked up by magnetometers... But they are sold as "novelties," so CS can sell 'em...

Sad, but that's the way it is nowadays... :(

WT needs to hone his business skills. But as Mom would say, You have it or you don't. I'm not slam'n WT, their are other makers and knife companies that would sell more knives if they would improve their PR skills. I'd still like to buy his #2 folder!

Vertigo going into the rotation today. Not going into the field with this knife but it will be a regular EDC. This knife was made for SD not splitting logs or opening cans of beans. Definately won't be pulling my trousers down, less than 3 oz.

Not everybody does email.

There would indeed be possible liability issues if Warren Thomas answered such questions, and if you can't understand that, you could be more of a business liability to him than an asset as a customer. I'm not saying this to be nasty, I'm trying to get across to you the idea that we live in rather unpleasant times (in this regard). This has nothing to do with Mr. Thomas' wishes or ideas about the subject (I have no idea of what they are), but are the difficult reality of our times.

Shaldag--- I finally called WT's sales rep. and he told me that email works best for him to do business. It's been close to two months and there has been no reply. How long does one wait? My desire to own a WT knife is waning.
