I got the warrior a few minutes ago .

The knife is very nice and so is the sheath , but they don´t seem to be made
for each other , meaning the kydex insert don´t match the knife very well .

The guard is down swept , the insert is up swept , creating a big gap ,
the knife rattles around in it , not form fitted at all .

I wonder if there is a solution to this from Spyderco in the works , or is
this the final sheath version ?

I would like an insert molded and fitted for the actual knife ,

this insert part is removable , and could easily be replaced,
would it be possible to get such an insert from Spyderco ?

You might want to read this post by Michael Janich over on the Spyderco Factory Forum.

Thanks Paul !

I still want a form fitted insert .

I modified the insert on mine, made it fit the guard better and also to hold the knife tighter. It took a few efforts with the old hair-dryer and a couple of clamps, but now it's snug enough so that the knife doesn't rattle and there is just enough retention to keep it in the sheath, upside down, even if the snap is open. Not so tight as to be able to jump around with the snap undone but a reasonable level of retention.

Sure it put a few marks and light scratches on the blade finish but that's acceptable because I really didn't like the original loose fit.

Kiitos Frankki !

You probably would have wanted a dedicated fitted insert too ,
at least before you modified yours , right ? ;)

Well yeah, would have been nice to have a fitted insert available, but I like to do small mods myself. Very much kitchen-table technical level, nothing too fancy for me. :D

I'll try some pics if the light is any good.

I hate to be the naysayer, but I actually prefer the tube insert design. My biggest problem with tightly fitted Kydex sheaths is that they trap grit around the edge. Theoretically they don't have to be made that way, it's just that everyone does. If you could have a sheath tightly fitted to the handle but tube style around the blade, that would be my ideal.

Joshua , I too like a tube insert , but it needs to be made for the knife , see the gap
between the guard and the insert ! ?

It only rests on each side , there is no more contact , the tube circumference is quite bigger than the
blade , zero retention , only rattle .

Ok, here's a couple of pics of my modded sheath.

First the area next to the guard, not a perfect fit yet but a quick and easy fix. Just a little whittling, filing and sanding.

And then: Look Ma, no hands.. err, snap I mean!

But as I said, not something to rig upside down and forget the whole retention strap. Not quite that tight and fitted.

Frankki !

You are quite the craftsman , sadly , I´m not .

That's nothing - you should hear me play piano! :p :D

Nah, it was simple to do with home equipment and tools, just heat, shape and press and then re-insert the liner into the sheath body. I guess I'm a bit of a compulsive tinkerer sometimes. So far there's been more satisfactory results than damage.. hopefully.

So , not wanting to be bested by the neighbor ( Frankki) , I went into "craftsman" mode ,
thinking , this will probably end in tears , but no , I was successful in my venture , I modified the insert , all is well now , please disregard my earlier worries .

I did the heating over a gas stove , for the forming & trimming I used a SS Rookie plus sandpaper , I can hold it upside down and shake it a bit , before it starts to slide out .

I think the Warrior is a great knife, I've wanted a version of the old Rekat Hobbit for years. I think the spec-op sheath is probably great for military carry, but too big and bulky for civilian carry unless you're out in the bush somewhere.
I read Janich's post but it cuts no ice with me. Spyderco'c Rock Salt ,which comes with a boltaren sheath, allowing inside the waistband or front pocket carry,is a much bigger knife. The Warrior is not that much bigger than the Temperance and of course that knife comes with a boltaren sheath as well. I think Spyderco missed the boat by not offering a choice of sheaths; spec-ops for the military and kydex for civilian use.
I like the Warrior enough to fork out more money and have a kydex sheath made for discrete carry but it's still a little irritating.

It would be nice to have a boltaron sheath too , having two sheaths would really expand
the carry options .

If spyderco offered one , I would buy it in an instant .

I know there are a lot of choices, and I'm sure Sal would love to make everyone happy. But, the Warrior knife was designed for military/LE use and offered to us 'civilians' secondarily (from all I've read).

We, as civilians, have tons of after-market choices. Everyone who wants X sheath can go and have one made, but it would be cost prohibitive for Spyderco to make 2-3 sheaths and still have people saying, "Gee, I wish they offered a '?' sheath for my preference." I personally love the Spec-Ops sheath, I have two of them. I bought them after-market when the original sheaths didn't work well for my purpose ~;-)

I saw an amazing example of an IWB sheath design, by Mike Sastre at River City Sheaths, which Mr. Sastre posted in the Spyderco website's general forum. I just brought that thread to the top over there, hopefully that's cool and I don't get banned or anything.
