Cool movie about indigenous Taiwanese people (they weren't always Chinese) who resisted Japanese occupation.
Now there are a few "tiny" inaccuracies like the Japanese using poison gas if in reality it was tear gas and stuff like that.
However overall it had great pictures and a nice story. It reminded me a lot of the Last of the Mohicans.
Why did I post it here? The native had impressive swords like that one here.

Some of the swords have the grip at a slight angle, which I like better.

pretty sword. they generally come from southern india. a particularly nicely shaped one, is that a scarf weld near the end of the triple fullers? it appears to be on both sides.

Very cool blades. They remind me a lot of the Himalayan Imports Survival Knife. I would think the kamis could make something like that pretty easily.

Thanks for sharing:)

Is the movie you're talking about? Watched a month or so ago, it's awesome

Guess they could use the socket for mounting as a spear head also? That is very cool! Im still trying to figure out how they made the scabbard. Looks like they wrapped the knife with wire and packed clay or something around the back of the knife then adhered it to the wood somehow. I can see the wire is imbedded in the sheath so there must be some kind of lining inside? Very interesting! Would like to see that movie. Good find Jens!

i found the whole movie online last year & watched it, well worth it.

the scabbard is just wood with a blade shaped rectangular channel cut into it. the wire is actually just wide staples nailed into the wood from one side to the other. cheap and cheerful allows for max drainage and ventilation. no lining.

Nice inscription :p
Seriously Especiale meets kobra.
How much would one cost from HI (since you mentioned lottery being required)

The spear would be quite heavy on the front. Kind of like a Naginata I guess?

Yes that's the movie. Looks like you got a link to the complete one. Nice!

nice to learn about the scabbard. It looks it was more of a guard to prevent injury than to protect the knife from the elements.

Steely,
glad you like them too. :)

don't think they ever used them in taiwan as a 'naginata'. the open socket is a coincidental part of their one piece construction. a filipino tribe makes a similar socketed , but shorter, knife which is sometimes used as a spear. they also use a similar 'staple' scabbard. it is, like the taiwan one, indeed just to keep the owner from severing his own bits.

Enjoyed Seediq Bale: Warriors of the Rainbow as well. I recall Kukulza28 from another forum which will remain nameless (and possibly here too) had a few of those tribal swords... laraw I believe they were called.

yes, vinney was of taiwanese ancestry (not han chinese) and offered a lot of insight on the native taiwan weaponry. i remember he had two of these made special by some of the few remaining native blacksmiths as well as a straight one as used by another tribe there. that forum whose name cannot be spoken has died and a trove of steely knowledge lost.
