Does anyone have experience with warthog sharpeners? A friend of mine, who's been collecting knives for several years, swears by his and wont use anything else.

They work, but you're limited in blade thickness and they only have 2 angle settings. Also, my Delica that I tried on one had a dull spot at the base of the blade that I couldnt get far enough into the frame to reach. The diamonds are also fairly coarse, and need a finer stone to use afterward, for my taste.

Got one. Brief synopsis: For someone who would NEVER think to be on this forum, sees knives as tools and tools alone, probably doesn't have many but wants the ones he has to perform, doesn't wanna spend more than an absolute minimum of time sharpening and has no idea how to do it freehand...it'll do nicely. For anyone else, don't bother. It WILL scratch up the knives you use it on unless you tape them off, bank on that. But for the guy who would otherwise never really bother to sharpen a knife but actually uses them, its a good tool. I gave mine to my uncle for Christmas, he is the perfect candidate for a Warthog....cooks A LOT, uses his knives a good bit, owns none over $40, and otherwise wouldn't bother to sharpen them.

If your interested enough to be posting here, look into a DMT Aligner, Sharpmaker, Edge-Pro or some other highly-regarded apparatus. Or like I use, dia-sharps and strops freehand, strait old school brother!! :D

I like GotSouthern's synopsis. I'll add:

I've seen them demo'ed at gun shows. They work to get knives paper slicing sharp, which is sharp enough for most people's uses. They are super simple and nearly idiot proof. Nearly. I think they are expensive for what you get. I also find them to be on the large side.

Brian.
