Just wondering if anyone uses or likes the Warthog V-Sharpener. I have seen it advertised in some blade magazines and was curious if any of you had any firsthand experience with it, and if so what do you think? Thanks in advance!

No one has had any experience with this sharpener system? I guess that answers whether I buy one or not!

Get a Sharpmaker from Spyderco, they are very hard to beat for the price.

Have read some reviews of it in knife mags, all positive. Said to be foolproof and puts on a good edge. Utilises diamond sharpening rods.

However, the thickness of the knife to be sharpened is a factor to be considered as apparently you have to run the knife between 2 vertical metal posts with a fixed separation.

Who did the reviews in the knife mags, real people or a man paid to review them? A man paid to review an advertiser's product may be inclined to make it sound better than it is.

I don't know everything, but I never heard of this particular sharpener. From the rough description, it sounds like a common principle, successfully used by other sharpeners, but I wouldn't say unless I could at least see a picture, and I'd rather hear the experience of one of our knife knuts, too.

Esav, I agree with you absolutely. As far as I have seen, reviews in knife mags are laudatory, or very, very diplomatic at the very worst. Some mags are worse than some others. Have wondered if this is due to knife mags only reviewing good products? ;)

Recently, a particular knife got a good review in a mag, which was contrary to the opinions of some knifeknuts voiced in this forum. Nuff said? ;)

I definitely agree with them only reviewing good products. There are only so many knives worth buying -- more than I can afford! :D but there are so many more not worth it, why waste time on them? Unfortunately, some so-so products will pass the test because a loyal advertiser has to be kept happy.

This may be why I no longer subscribe to any magazines ... the forums take up enough of my time and provide much more fun and information.

Here's a pic and link to the Warthog sharpener. It probably works OK but there are too many springs and moving parts to suit me... Eric is right-for the money, you just can't find anything better than a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

I've been using one of these for a couple of months. If you are already adept at using a SharpMaker the Warthog doesn't offer a lot.

If you have a hard time maintaining your angle or are rounding off tips using a SharpMaker, then the Warthog may be for you.

It does offer three grits of diamond rods, however it only comes with one. It offers three edge angles versus two on the SharpMaker. It comes with excellent instructions and is well made. Rods are slow to change out since each rod has a screw at each end. I have no reason to doubt the construction but gut feel is it could be a bit stouter.

I find it faster than the SharpMaker if I want to sharpen all my kitchen knives. There is no set up time assuming you preset the angle and have the grit you want. It effortlessly produces consitent scary sharp edges.

I believe the ultimate sharpener might be the Warthog V Sharp design but manufactured by Spyderco. Sal would make it more robust and the rods would snap in and out.

Someone was selling these at a gunshow I was set up at this past weekend. I looked at it and feel, IMO it's just another contraption you could be wasting your money on. They were $80.00 and $90.00. Seems like alot of money for a sharpening device. There are so many less exspensive alternatives available. I'm not saying they don't work as the man was giving demos and they seem to work well. Sharpening is something, with practice, can be accomplished by anyone for just a few dollars worth of equipment.
