As far as I know, there hasn't been a catapult thread in the Cantina lately...

While in England last week, we took a day trip to Warwick Castle, home of the world's largest trebuchet.

Very cool. Got to see it fling not a 300-pound rock, but a steel cauldron of fire.

Cooler yet, I caught a pic of it sailing out of sight. :D Actually, I heard/felt it thump down, somewhere.

Here we go... sitting across from the Treb.:

Just a speck...

But, blown up, you can see the fire still lit. Looks like a comet...:

Oh, you mean building one. I hadn't thought about it.... I probably could make a Roman "onager"-style catapult... lemme see...

Hi Mike,

Just remember, start small, and clear it with whoever's down range first....:D:D:D

No worries Mike. I don't recall seeing Trebuchets in the ATF regs...

It MAY qualify as a destructive device though!

Thanks for sharing. Next time I'll loan you my Canon that does 8fps. I did a series of shots of an old canon being fired. I got the fuse lighting and flame belching from the bore. They liked it so much they bought it and made a cool display from it.

Dayum! That's really cool!
The difference between a yard (36 inches) and a meter (39.37201 inches) doesn't seem like much but that measly little 3.37201 inches most certainly adds up!
At 18 yards high the trebuchet is 54 feet but at 18 meters it becomes about 59 1/2 feet high.
A linked site says: "On the end of the arm is the sling with one end of rope permanently attached; the other is hooked over a curved iron pin. As the arm lifts the rope becomes unhooked and the projectile is released and fired up to 30m in the air and a distance of up to 300m."
That equates to 98 feet in the air and a distance of up to 384 feet!  :D

C'mon Mike, you can build one at least 1/4 size even though 1/3rd scale would be better! And I'm betting one of the cast iron Dutch Ovens or Tri-legged Kettles would do as a receptacle for a load of Greek Fire or something similar. LMRRAO! <VBESEG> :D

Nice little engineering project. I've made a few of these things on a smaller scale, and probably with less complicated designs. Doesn't look like much, until you see the people standing next to it and get a better sense of size.

If it hasn't been brought up before, "Backyard Ballistics" is a good book with many projects along these lines - including some that only take a few minutes.

Cool pics. I think you can justify building one. One, you have to protect Marta from Pirates. Two, you've got the ideal safe firing grounds.

To think I am easily amused by potato cannons, I am sure a trebuchet could offer much more amusement. :p

There must be some sort of government grant to build such a thing. Perhaps since it is "green".....

:D

I was at warwick castle a number of years ago... I recall seeing the fully armored knight and some men sparring in various stages of armor, but not a trebuchet. I will have to look at these pictures when I get home and see if they jog my memory. (Photobucket blocked at work)

Neighboring counties perhaps!

Very neat. I've been a fan of ballistae, but anything flinging stuff that far is cool in my book.

the trebuchet is a fairly recent addition, wasn't there the last time i visited a few years back. (it's about an hour's drive)
