Was Gifted an Axe Head

My wife caught me watching axe refinishing videos so she went on Etsy to buy me a vintage axe head to work with. I'm sure it will buff out!

I hope she didn't pay too much, not much of a blade left either so somehow someone used it. What do you think happened to it? (Besides a sleazy seller who took advantage of ignorance?)

Granted I am a complete newb at this so if someone can convince me that this is the "way it's supposed to be" I'd like to hire you for my political campaign.

Looks like somebody used as a splitting wedge. Sounds like a good woman though!

That was sweet of her to try! Looks like you'll need heat and a 3lb sledge to get that back in line. Just keep the bit wrapped in a wet cloth while you do it to keep it cool.
Can you take a couple side view photos? Are there any markings on it?

Seriously? I suppose steel is steel but dang. I can't find any marks, I'll do some more shots tomorrow though.

Again, outside of a dozen Liam Hoffman videos I'm on terra incognito here.
