Looking at the CRK website and some online shops, I noticed that the fixed blades used to have a PVD coating and that is now changed to KG Gun Kote. These are two very different coatings where the Gun Kote is spray on & bake and a PVD is done in vacuum with plasma evaporation of the thin film, which is almost like a ceramic deposition on the blade.

Does anyone know when or why the change was made?

Reason I ask is that I have a Pacific that I ordered direct from CRK last year and it shows Black PVD. I just purchased a Green Beret and I'm expecting it to come with KG Gun Kote.

Confirmation there was a switch from PVD coatings to KG GunKote, probably starting in 2018. The new Green Beret arrived and the birth card refers only to a black coating while the information card references KG GunKote. The KG GunKote has a sandy finish on the Green Beret and the PVD is smooth on the Pacific.

I am also curious why the change from PVD. I would think PVD would hold up better. I don't know if I have ever seen it on titanium handles though. Perhaps the limited run Zaans with KG Gun Kote were done that way because the KG sticks to the titanium better? Or maybe it is less expensive.

Have you noticed a difference in the durability between the two?

Sound like you can ‘restore’ KG Guncote... maybe not so easy with PVD?
