Was this a dumb thing to do?

Some of you may have seen my other thread about the color variance between an old olive green Benchmade 940 and a brand new one that I just bought which is more of a forest or spruce green.

I called Benchmade a couple days ago and asked them and the person I spoke to told me that the only ones he had ever seen in that color were the very old ones. All the others he had seen were much darker. He said the annodizing process has something to do with it and the shades can vary from one run to the other; Particularly with green but for some reason the early ones were lighter.

As it turns out the older one is a pre-production model numbered 0976/1000. The blade is 154CM to the new one's 30V. It is half serrated which I don't like but oh well, you can't have everything. The color as I stated is much lighter which I find very appealing. I did take pictures of the two side by side with my camera and as soon as I find the time I'll see if I can post them.

Anyway, to get to the point, I really like the knife so I asked my buddy if he would sell it to me and he offerred to trade me for the new one straight up. It took me all of about a millisecond for me to hand him my knife.

I figure I can always buy myself another new one. What do you guys think?

I'd never trade a plain edge S30V blade for a serrated edge 154CM blade based on the tint of the handle color .... especially if I was planning on using it.

Well it wasn't so much for the tint as the fact that it is different and a pre-production. This one will go in the collection. I have plenty of other knives I can use. Like I said, I'll probably just buy another 940.

Well, you asked.... so Sargent666 answered. ;)

I think the improvement of quality beween S30V and 154CM is much more debatable than the difference in monetary value between a pre-production type knife and the current production line.

So in other words, I don't think it was dumb, as long as you're holding on to it for those reasons and not because you like the color handles better.

Were you willing to pay the full price of a new 940 for your Buddie's? If so, then you're not out anything, as you already said you will probably buy another new one.

And, most likely, you will. I think you figured correctly, my friend.

Thanks Derek. Actually I think I just found one. I'm guessing the MO didn't arrive yesterday? If not.it should definately be there tomorrow.

By the way, I dont have a problem with Sarge's honesty I appreciate it actually. I figured some wouldn't see it as a smart move but also figured an equal number sick steelheads like the kind that hang around here would understand where I'm comind from too. . .

Not dumb if that's what you wanted. I once bought a car with fancy after market wheels and tires. I didn't like them and "traded down" to factory wheels with someone that liked them. I've also traded several new knives equaling the msrp of a rare discontinued knife because I wanted it. No regrets.

I didn' t pay near full price for the new one. I got a really good deal on it. What would I have paid for the old one? That's a really good question. I would have a very hard time trying to locate one at any price.

I can get as many as I want in the current model so to me that makes it a good trade, but that's just me. . .

That is a good plan.

It's a done deal. I found one on Amazon identical to the one I traded away: ie, Plain 30v blade. It should be here Tuesday with the expedited shipping!:D

This has been a very good knife year for me and its going to be a good week. I have that one on the way as well as the 710 D2 I bought from Derek. I also have a brand new Martin BT Special that I'm having built. I just realized that combined with all the others I've purchased recently, in the last few weeks I've bought more knives than I had in the entire last year combined. I think I have a problem . . . :o

I think you're right. I'm very exited about it. I think it may even replace my beloved Stryker that I've been carrying for years.

Here are the pictures I took with my camera. Excuse the quality I'm a horrible photographer. The difference is greater than what shows on the pics but it will give you a general idea what I'm talking about. I'm liking this little knife.

I never cared for the 940 myself, but if you like it then YES it was the right thing to do. I agree with your choice of handle :) and blade steel.

As a collector it sure will be nice. If only it were PE!

Wha you described is a first production rather than preproduction. The serial numbers first production are users, one with the word "preproduction" writen on the blade are keepers. Some people do use them but they are more likely to have value down the road.

Parden the picture quality and all sarcasm aside I agree and that's why I jumped on it. He used this thing for years but it's in remarkably good shape considering what it's been through.
