Was your military dull out of the box?

I got a new model cpm 440 military today from a small time internet dealer. The price was great but the knife is dull. When I got my 40/60 Wegner the serrations were like shark's teeth but this military feels like a bread knife. I'm wondering if I got one like the unsharpenable military from another thread.

Anyway, this is why I own so many Spydercos: if you do get an off product you know what kind of company you're dealing with. Aside from the blade the balance and lightness of such a big awesome folder is a thing of beauty. What will my starmate be like?

That's one of the hardest thing about buying things off the net. Is your knife "truly" brand new? My friend once ordered a knife and it appeared to be new. After detailed and close examination, it turned out that it had been used and resharpened. They did a really good job of hiding it.

Hmmm.. could be that it's mainly because of the new serration design? It might not feel sharp, but have you tried cutting anything with it yet?

As a last resort, you know what company you're dealing with I'm sure...

So if you don't feel too good about the knife, send it to them, and they will take care of you, guaranteed!

You know. I checked my serrations against the Wegner and saw that the Wegner is toothier. I did cut a piece of frozen pound cake and a peach for a late night snack and the spydie military did fine. I'm guessing that the the shallower serrations might be stronger but not sharper?

I also used my 204 sharpmaker and 40 strokes later the knife feels better. But still not as sharp as I thought it would be.

Yes, the angles are different, as the steel is different so they need to be.

My feelings about the Starmate's (also CPM 440V) serrations are similar.

Steve, I have a plain edge military and right out of the box it was razor shaving sharp. But in the future plan to order a RL Military with full serrations. I hope I do not have any trouble with sharpness though.

My plain edged Military was scary sharp from the box, just like all Spydies.

I spoke to the dealer and he promised me that the knife was never used or returned. I believe him. I remember reading a thread about a serrated military with a dullness problem.

That's why I own spydercos: I know the company stands behind the product.

Definately. If it's unacceptable to you, we need to see it. Feel free to call or write me if you need direction on sending it in.

I just checked all I had in stock. All are kick ass sharp. Sounds like you got one that slipped by Danelle's desk. She personally checks every knife that leaves Spyderco by shaving all the mens beards who work their. This is also a very good way for her to keep them in line

My Militaries were all as dull as razors... I wondered why all the guys looked like they had mange at the factory...

Hmm, mine's not so sharp. Is it supposed to be as sharp as, for example, a Calypso? My brand-new Military is about as sharp as my Endura that I've been carrying and using for many months. BTW, these are all plain-edge. If it matters, I bought it from The Cutlery Shoppe - www.cutleryshoppe.com

My Military plain edge was dull out of the box. Also, the handle spacer is not flush with the G-10 scales.

I mentioned this in a previous post, but I would just like to bring it up again since we are on the subject.

Regardless, the blemish is minor and the Military is one of the finest production "users" I own.

My plain edge military 440v is just now starting to loose some of its edge on the front of the blade. Was very sharp out of the box and held an edge well.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?

I have owned both the older generation and the new model in 440V (plain edge of course) and I never once experienced any of the problems mentioned.
IMHO, send it back and get a good one, it is a keeper and will not let you down.
2nd best knife I have ever owned.

JerseyCitySteve,

It seems that you got unlucky, I've never heard of a dull Military right out of the box, I didn't think they existed, but of course, like others said it could have been used before you got it.

Never had a spyderco that did not come VERY sharp from the box.. I did get unsharp knives from other sources though (benchmade automatic, to name just one)

Just got the new CPM 440 Terzula and it is also very sharp.
