I picked up a used clasic that is to be a user. When I disassembled it for cleaning, I noticed some fine straight line scratches on the washers. They look as though someone tried to polish them. This doesn't seem to have any impact on the knife, but in the back of my head it bothers me that the knife was probably tinckered with. Should I a: ignore the scratches b: try to polish the washers on a loaded strop, or c: be without the knife for awhile and send it in.

If the function of the knife is good, you'll be fine with it. If it will give you a warm fuzzy feeling, send it in for new washers. I would not try to polish it out due to the tolerances of the knife. Doing that may throw the knife off center and I'm sure the folks at CRK would know if the knife has been altered. Give it some time, use the knife, take it down to see if there is any concern with the scratched washers. Some of mine on the older solid washers have wear grooves on them and they function perfectly fine.

I'm going to go with..........

A) Ignore the scratches because.......... B) The washers will wear in and polish overtime by themselves and.......... C) You can send the knife in for the full "Spa" treatment when you're ready for a refurbishing.

All in all I'd say it's a win win and you won't have to be without your Sebbie unless you have too. Like when it's time to pay a visit to CRK to get that "Like New" condition back.

After all she is a "User" right? :)

Circular groves are normal wear, but straight lines acroos the entire washer are not.

I use 2000 grit on my washers when I clean and lube my sebs. 2000 probably won't do much to the scratches but it may make them smoother.

If the scratches bother you that much send it in. I'd use it as is if it was my knife.

The sensible thing is to keep using it unless I notice a problem. Knife knuts don't always do the sensible thing though.

I'm with Ajack60 on this. Use it until something functional causes you to send it in. I've had fairly well-used Classics converted to 21-style washers & lanyard pins and it's made absolutely no difference in the feel or function of the knife. If it's working right now, I really don't think you'll notice any difference in the real world (in your imagination, maybe you will).

I'm with Dale and Ajack, as long as it;s smooth with no wobble, rock on!

The right thing to do is to buy another crk to take your mind off the other till it gets back from the spa.

I would not try to polish the scratches out. If you polish enough to get the scratches out, you may reduce the thickeners enough to create some horizontal play on the pivot bushing. And if you don't, why bother? ;). I'd ignore it for a while and see what develops.
