Washer question

I've looked through lots of threads without finding an answer. I just received a pkg from MonkeyEdge with my armorers tool and a pack of washers and screws, so I took apart my XM-18 only to find both washers were the same. I replaced them with the two different sized washers, but don't see a change in knife performance.
Why are there two different size washers? What difference does the od make? Thickness and id seem to be the same.
The knife is working great, but it did before I changed the washers too. Just curious.

Thanks. I appreciate all the help you guys have given me.

The smaller washer goes on the lockside-side of the blade to make way for the lockbar engaging. :)

typically you have a smaller washer on the locking side so it doesnt interfere with the lock bar, and the larger washer on the other side its just to provide a larger area between the blade and the handle scales, doesnt do much compared to one with the same sized washers but i believe its supposed to make it smoother. i know crk does it with his perforated washers to trap the grease in the pivot area and keep it smooth longer

Thanks Prelude. I knew it was little on lock side, but there wasn't any prob with lock engaging prior to me replacing the washers, and it had two large ones.
Thanks to you as well Krieg.

No prob man. If you have a XM-24, I believe they use both large ones. At least all the 24's that I've had used them. "The More You Know"

It is covered in the FAQ in this thread:

The smaller one on the lockside is largely aesthetic although it could potentially interfere with the lock on a 3" (I'd have to check, I believe it is close).
