Washers not fitting?

I just got a set of washers sent to me from CRK because I think I pinched the ones already in my large Sebenza. Anyway, when they got here today, I took the knife apart and when I put the washers in and tightened everything down, the blade was so stiff, it took 2 hands to get it to move. Thinking I may have put them in wrong, I did everything over again and got the same results. Any idea what could be wrong here?

On a side note, I don't think I crimped the old washers because when I put them back in (since the new ones wouldn't work), the knife was smoother than ever, probably because I actually put them in right this time.:D

Crimped washer is the most common cause of the tight movement. It seems to be tricky for newbie like me. You might swear by eye-balling it that it is aligned properly, but the proof is in the smoothness of the blade movement.

Also make sure you don't have any grit or lint between the washers, even the smallest piece can cause problems.

If the movement is tight, dis-assemble and try again ... there are some tips in the FAQ, I found them more confusing than helpfull. Try reading this thread:

Give Ted's way a try... I've experimented with the exact method. The handles gripped a little too much to get the blade/washers between the handle slabs, so I loosened up the stop pin a little. So when inserting the blade, I recommend a slightly loose stop pin... to be tightened after the pivot pin screw is inserted. Just my slightly different way.

In the FAQ Anne Reeve specifically says to not loosen the stop pin "Slip the blade into the handle, and insert the screw and pivot pin, tightening the screw firmly (but not too tight!). If the blade assembly does not go into the handle, DO NOT force it or loosen the stop pin screw."

I think the idea is that with the pivot pin tightly between the handles, it will prevent the washers from sliding under the pivot pin.

But hey, it took me four tries to get it right ... whatever works for you.
