I don't know if this is the place to ask, but I didn't see a better place.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the washers that Benchmade uses in their axis line of folders? Especially the ones with the full liners (a la 705, 710, 730).

I figured if I asked this over at the Benchmade forum I'd just get a bunch of flack over considering disassembly.

I measured the ones in my 710 last night. I left the measurements at home, so I'll post them tonight.

I'm thinking the same thing you are. I just need to find washers of the right size, and not have to buy them by the thousand.....

On a semi-related topic, does anyone know how to get the the axis-lock buttons off of the locking bar? I see that they should screw off, but there are some sort of through-pins or set screws holding them on, and I don't have any punches or screwdrivers small enough.

Greg, I have read that Benchmade has a special tool to remove those. Th holes are NOT for set screws, but for pins of the tool to insert in the buttons, to allow unscrewing them. While I have not removed the buttons from the locking bar of mine, I have removed the the thumb-studs of my 710, which are the same type set-up (pre-torx thumb studs). I just use pliers, using a piece of cloth between the jaws of the pliers and the studs to prevent scratching. After breaking loose what appeared to be a little loc-tite, removing them was no problem. If I ever need to remove the locking bar buttons, that is probably what I will try to do.

I saw an ad in a magazine (probably BLADE) that would sell any of the common size washers in very small quantities (like 10 or less, IIRC). I'm hoping that the washers of my Benchmades will be one of those common sizes. They had, IIRC, phosphor bronze, brass, and maybe even stainless steel, in the common sizes.

OBTW, if I can find the advert again, I'll post info here in this thread.

Off the top of my head, I want to say that the washers were .025 thick, with an OD of .600 and an ID of .225. All figures are in inches.

I'll verify tonight.

I had no luck finding bronze washers in the right size, so I just made my own from .025 brass shim stock from the hardware store. I used the original nylatron washers as templates.

Good idea, CK, if I can find the stock.

I'm fairly certain, Greg and CK, that I the ad that I saw had numerous sizes available, in small quantities. I wasn't able to find the mag with the ad last night, but I will look more this afternoon/evening, and post here when I find it, or don't find it. Thanks, Greg.

CK,

How hard was it to keep the whole thing flat? I've tried similar stuff in the past and had a bad time with the shim stock curling up from cutting, handling, etc.

I drill the center hole first, then I cut the stock in small bits and work my way down to the OD template line. Longer cuts almost guarantee warpage.

I've looked through 5 or 6 recent issues of knife magazines, and haven't been able to find the advertisement that I saw before.

I'll keep looking, but no luck so far. I'm almost positive that .025 thickness was one of the sizes that they normally carried. I just wish I could remember the magazine or name.

Well, I found it. Or one, maybe not "IT".

Sheffield Knifemakers Supply, in Fla.
Orders only at 1-800-874-7007
Cust. Serv. at (904) 775-6453

They have washers a $0.50 / pair, in bronze, copper, teflon, and nylatron. Unfortunately, the bronze are only in 0.005 thickness, copper only in 0.002 to 0.003. And they don't mention special orders. Sooooo... I don't know if this in the "RIGHT" one or not, or if it would work. Maybe 5 in 0.005 thickness?
