Washing down outerwear?

Ok, this is what I would do with that is put it in the Permanent Press selection on your washing machine and use a little cold water wash which you can pay $1.00 for any Dollar Tree, Dollar General, etc... and follow the amount you should use in washing this item. If you can, let it dry outside and guarantee it will be nice and cozy once you put it back in the coat. Make sure you put it on Permanent Press because it helps maintain it's shape and gives it body where the other regular cycles have a spin cycle that is too rough for that. It works very well. I wish I had it, I'd wash it for you. I just like to wash clothes. :)

What detergent should I use? Nikiwax is hella expensive for regular use. Thanks!

How regular do you wash your down jackets?

When you put in the washer, make sure you use cold water and proper detergent. Not normal ones. Either use nikwax or something like woolite.

When you're done with that YOU CAN use the dryer on low heat setting. This will take quite a long time but air drying will be longer and the down will not fluff up properly. In the dryer i've heard recommendations of putting a few clean tennis balls so it'll agitate the jacket and help fluff up the down (some people put clean sneakers). But whatever it is make sure it's on the low heat setting.

If it is an expensive jacket, with baffles (rather than just stitched through) wash it by hand. The agitator in the machine can rip the baffles. Be careful carrying it when it is wet too, the weight of the water in the down can rip the baffles - don't hang it up saturated for this reason either. Lie it down flat, and press the excess water out of it before putting it in the drier. Nikwax downwash is probably the best, but a mild powder detergerent is probably OK.

If it's in the shape that Will P.s' stating and he has a good point, I'd carry a pocket size bottle of Fabreeze with me. You hunting up in the New York woods?

Thanks! It's just a EMS down sweater, so I'll hand wash it with the nikiwax. (It's urban winter used)

I do hope that works really well for you. Your winters are so long and cold there!!! I have never heard of Nikiwax in my entire life, is it a powdered wash? Remember, don't squeeze just use a towel to soak up the dampness and then lay flat over an object that can vintilate it.

Nikwax make waterproofing and washing products for outdoor gear, clothes and boots. Down Wash is a liquid but it is specially made for down, so presumably it is ok to use on down.
