washing knives in the dishwasher

I used to wash my spyderco endura in the dishwasher. It got really clean and no problems. Then I stuck my Boker/Nealy Specialist 1 in for A wash. When it was done the G-10 scales were A kind of gray color, they were quite black before that. If you got them wet they looked black, when they dried, back to gray. I sold it A couple of days later, so I don't know if it was permanent. So have you ever done that? Do you put your knives in the dishwasher? Better watch out if they are G-10. Well thanks for reading this. Brian

I think handwashing is probably the way to go. Could it be possible that when your dishwasher went onto the drying cycle the heat discolored the G10? I haven't gotten my knives too crustly, mostly pocket lint, and I can just blow it out.

BTW, did it have dishwasher safe instructions?

Mitch,
I guess they thought I would be smart enough not to stick it in there

They were wrong! Nice web site BTW.

One of the nice aspects of the skeletonized handles on many balisongs is that you can throw 'em in the old dishwasher, top rack, and just wash 'em out. Relubricate the joints when your done.

I suspect the cause of the discoloration was the soap. Dishwasher soap is high in chlorine. This explains that powerful smell that you get to enjoy when you notice that one last glass you left out in the living room and get to add it into the cycle already in progress.

I wouldn't suggest putting knives on the bottom rack. That's right near the heating element and they could get really hot.

Ah, dont worry about the g10, I wash my knives in the dishwasher all the time. Usually the g10 comes out a little lighter in color. After a few days of use and sweating on it it will come back. Or, you can squirt the g10 with wd-40...wipe it off good and the g10 is back to normal color. I think the dishwasher just gets it very clean and takes all the normal body oils out of it and its just much cleaner it where the lighter shade comes from. Whatever the reason, the color will return and I have never noticed any problems with knives I have washed many, many times.

UPDATED and REVISED

Well, I have never put them in the dishwasher, but by mistake I left a Case Stag Congress in my pocket and it when into the washing machine. When it came out it was extremely dull, it looked like a piece of chicken bone. All the shiny finish was striped off. Since I didn't find the knife for a few days it also has a lot of rusting on it now.
THANKS!!!
