As all we Porch regulars know, one of the very best things about this place is the spirit of camaraderie and the friendships which are formed here. As Carl has often said, there really is a family atmosphere here, people generally look out for one another. Anyone who stays here for a while, and participates, will find that. Hardly a day goes by without an act of kindness by one forum member to another being witnessed, and most of us feel better by being part of this fine place.
Ive been lucky to make many good friends since I found my way here, and whether Im posting here or not, theyre in my thoughts daily. I wonder what theyre up to, how their kids are, how that house move is going - and when IS that baby going to come?!
This may seem a little odd to those who are just passing through, but I know Im not alone in this.
Like all friends and families, we exchange gifts, and its great to be able to send something to someone, which you know theyll enjoy. I have to say, I sometimes find it hard to know what to buy for my own kids, but of course its easier with friends here, we share an interest in traditional knives, and often other things too. Look at all these coins flying about for instance, theyve become a mark of friendship in themselves, and this forum is noted for its generous giveaways.
It seems like ages ago now since I sent a small Sleeveboard Penknife to Stephen - Old & In The way - and since then weve become firm friends, corresponding regularly, and Ive been the recipient of his generosity more than once. As many will already know here, Stephen really is a very kind a thoughtful guy. I received a package from him yesterday, which showed both those qualities in abundance.

Along with a lovely letter, which was a real pleasure to read, Stephen had sent me one of Charlies Washington Jacks. When I first saw this knife, I thought it was a delicious-looking pattern, and all the different versions have been quite spectacular. However, my choice would have been the ebony, and that is what Stephen so generously sent me. As I often do, Im afraid I must apologise for these poor-quality photographs, taken on my kitchen table on what is quite a dreadful day here in England (and even worse in Scotland).

To go with the knife (and its companion pin), Stephen enclosed a bespoke pocket sheath, which hed commissioned from Barry. As always, with Barrys work, the quality is outstanding thanks Barry  I dare say there are a few of you wondering about the detail. Well thats the crest of the German Sankt Pauli soccer club, whom I briefly mentioned in a post a while back, and which Stephen thoughtful as always picked up on. Stephen, together with one of his fine sons, follows soccer, and I think both watch more of it than I do. I was born (!) a Sheffield Wednesday FC supporter, but Ive not been to their ground since the late 1970s. Ten years ago I was in Hamburg, as part of my work then, and visited the Sankt Pauli stadium. The club is owned by its fans and I liked that, and began to follow them a little. More recently, I found out that a local St Pauli supporters group streamed matches, and I joined. Its a bit of fun in a nice atmosphere, I get to drink a beer and watch a match. Those boys are going to be SO jealous of my pocket-sheath - even if most of them wont actually quite know what it is!

Along with these treasures, Stephen also included a very special coin, a 1921 silver US Morgan Dollar in fantastic condition. Wow, what a great coin, and with some real weight to it. Stephen told me all about the history of the coin in his letter, and like his other gifts, its something that I shall treasure always.
Thank you so much Stephen
Ive been friends with Papa Andi (formerly Uncle Andi) Humppa since I first started posting regularly here, and when his son, young Max, was no more than a twinkle in his fathers eye. Andi is also a great friend, and he has been very helpful whenever Ive wanted any information about the German cutlery industry. Hes been helpful on other matters too, for example, his great advice led to my getting a GEC #66 Serpentine Jack in Valley Green jigged bone, exactly the same as his. Its one of my favourite knives.

I also received a package from Andi yesterday, containing a Christmas card from him and his wife and son, and this Scout knife made by Wusthof of Solingen. Thanks Andi, youre a pal
I just wanted to share my good fortune with you my friends, and to say thanks to these two fine gentlemen from our number. Perhaps its a little early, but Ill also take this opportunity to wish all our members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and thank you for your friendship and for being part of a forum where giving is a year-round tradition
