im heading to DC for about a week and have been reading knife laws, which are not black and white. what the heck can i carry there now a days? i usually carry a spyderco paramilitary, native, or my mini dejavoo. it seems that i can carry any of these as long as i do plan i harming anyone/thing with them. can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Depending on where in DC you're going and doing; many of the "public" buildings even museums have metal detectors and screening. If visiting anything like that leave your blades at home or well hidden in your hotel.

Fully agree with Rich. Depends if you want to go anywhere in the heart of town (as most people from out of town do). Some museums such as Air and Space do put your bags through X-ray machines and they have metal detectors (which 8/10 are not active). Others like the art galleries only open any bags you carry and poke around with a stick (not necessarily logically either. They searched my wife's little purse, yet I'd standing right next to her with a photographer's vest with bulging pockets and they just waved me through). Having any knife or even scissors is prohibited in most such buildings, whether the screening is thorough or not. Places like the Old Post Office (which is a mall) do have a working metal detector and will not allow you in with any knives.

Barring any building with it's own restrictions, the rest of DC has a 3 inch blade limit. Yes technically § 22-4514 requires possession "with intent to use unlawfully against another" but this intent is often presumed by the mere fact that your knife is larger than 3 inches. Plus I'm told local police can be a tad...thick, so I'd avoid any unnecessary risk while walking around.

I forgot that I had a Boker Sub-Com in my pocket while going into the museum of art a couple of years ago. The security guy was pretty cool and told me I would not be allowed to enter with it. As we rode the subway into DC, I had no car to leave it in. I ended up hiding it in the shrubs in front of the building. After spending 3 hours in the museum I went to my hiding place and retreived the knife. Moral of the story? Do not carry a blade of any size if you plan on seeing the sights in DC. Some museums are pretty lax on there security as others are ready to strip search you. Doesnt make alot of senseIMO.

I was part of a 3 bus tour of boy scouts, most of us Eagle scouts in DC where we went into the museums. Those security guards had their hands full with holding knives for us. I wouldn't bring anything bigger than a spyderco bug, not even an SAK classic. The guards are pretty understanding in the buildings down there, but its not worth the trouble to carry a pocketknife around DC in my experience.
