Wasn't there talk of a new folder in the works?

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

Any particular style? We have had a number of people make suggestions for a new folder. The wharnecliff pattern is a popular idea. Persistent rumors of a new Umfaan surface occasionally.

Thanks! I remember reading about a project with Bill Harsey? Does that ring any bells? It was a while ago.

Chris and Bill have collaborated on a series of fixed blades, and Bill has folders being made by Lone Wolf. So it's certainly a possibility, having them put a folder together.

A Classic Sebenza that's a little smaller than the large, and larger than the small, would be nice but I'd be surprised if CR would do it.

I would like that too!

My bet is its going to be a liner lock. You know Chris Reeve's style; he likes to perfect knives which he perceives to have a weakness. With a liner lock he can have matching sides. Perhaps with an "assisted" opening? That market would be huge for CRK; lots of collectors like CRK folders but won't buy them because they prefer autos or semi autos.

Just my $0.02 worth.

:foot:

Chris Reeve has expressed his negative feelings about autos as being unnecessarily bad publicity for the knife industry.

His framelock was an attempt to correct the weaknesses of the liner lock, although you could look at the Mnandi as being a liner lock.

Thanks for correcting that; I was unaware that Chris has made that statement. I was relaying information that I have picked up over the years at this and other forums. Many people have stayed away from CRK folders because of the lack of a semi auto version. Personally, I prefer manuals because of their simplicity and the quality of CRK.

It is exactly that simplicity and mechanical directness that distinguishes CRK knives from the mass of merely popular, current fad knives.

Companies like Spyderco and Kershaw, for example, also have their niche where their specialized characteristics make their knives as instantly recognizable as CRK's. For someone else to pretend to Spyderco's lean & mean, form follows function philosophy, or Kershaw's stylish high tech experimentation would be hitching a ride on someone else's wagon.

Great companies like these don't need to adopt each other's special quality, they develop their own. Like Sal says, they're all good.

It's toward the very end of the video, as I recall, having viewed it a good while back. I asked CRK at the '07 Blade Show if it had debuted, and they kindly responded "no." Maybe sometime down the line...

I'm guessing this is what these Gentlemen are inquiring about.

Ah-ha! :D

Incidentally, these guys evidently go back some time together. The first time I came across Bill Harsey's name was browsing the CRK website and noticing on the diagram of the Sebenza that Mr. Harsey did the drawing.

Early in 2007 (or late 2006), there was a thread on this forum that stated CRK was going to release a new fixed blade and a new folder in 2007. They released a new fixed blade (the Inyoni) but never released a new folder. A couple of weeks ago, someone posted a thread about a visit they made to the CR shop. That thread hinted that CR may have something new for Blade 2008. Hopefully it is the long awaited new folder.

I hope its the 'Crocodile' that they mention on the DVD thats the new folder.

Bill Harsey talked briefly about this on another forum too. In fact, I think I may have quoted him in an earlier thread here on BF.

I remember a thread about this, a pre-order or something...

From what CRK told me when I visited them 2 weeks ago was they hope to have something new in time for Blade, but I got no impression if it was a new fixed blade or folder. They are very good at making very good knives and are willing to take their time to make things right. They definitely have a lot of projects on the horizon all in various stages. The hardest thing is getting the tooling/patterns ready for a new knives, especially I would think for a folder. Plus the metals market has been out of control recently. Titanium is tripled in price over the past year or so.

Troy,

Good to see another SW VA fella around. Gimme a shout if you're ever in the Noke.

All I have to say is this is an exciting time and a new folder in the works is going to be great.

I am sure everyone has some "wouldn't it be nice if".... ideas?

There was a preorder late Fall, 2006. I pre-ordered one then and here is my response from CRK:

Thank you so much for your order. Just to let you know we do not have a release date yet on our new folder, nor do we have the specifics worked out -- but you will definitely be one of the first it is offered too. We really appreciate your enthusiasm for our knives & our new products. Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance.

Kind regards,

Heather

Hope they still have one in the works and still have the pre-order list!

T.
