I haven't posted much but thought I'd share this. Last winters shelter from picking the spot, making the shelter, use and tidying up the area by clearing invasive stuff and removing leaf debris, planting grass seed and wildflower seed. I also hauled out bags of decades old glass bottles and steel beer cans.

Pics:

Found the spot and a picture after some initial clearing.

Put up a frame and started tarping it.

Put up a quick reflector from things laying around followed by some big hunks of bark.

And some great nights out with a nice fire!

Drying a few sticks. One for a bow, 2 for pot holders, one to make a hatchet handle and and one coyote club.

Spring came early :( and time to tidy the place up. I had been clearing trails into this place from fall thru winter and saved the immediate area around the shelter for last. I raked leaf debris and you can see one of the piles of buckthorn and honeysuckle that I'll burn next fall and winter. I plan on continuing to clear this area in the years to come.

Freshly raked and ready for seeding.

And a week and a half after spreading grass and wildflower seed. You can also see how much I cleared compared to the first few photo's. It was a lot of work but great exercise. Mixed in all that invasive growth, there are a variety of hardwood trees.
Should anyone find it, they will be hard pressed to find any garbage anywhere within a hundred foot of the area. As you can see by the next two pictures, there are decades of boozers garbage out here. An original MD 20/20 bottle?

The grass is coming in nicely!

All the clearing was done by hand with these. They have all equally earned my respect!

Watching the grass grow. I'm leaving the frame up to use for tomato plants this summer and I'll be using this next winter again. Curoius to see what kind of flowers sprout from the seed. I spread it around each tree and around the edge of the grass.

Some wildlife nearby.

Nice spot man! I was just burning out my fire pit in the woods out back yesterday and noticed I really need to plant some grass in the area to cut down on the mud...either that or build a rock hearth around the pit and the grass sounds easier :)

Cool thread!

I hope to see updated pics when the grass seed starts to grow.

awesome spot! the grass is a great idea, should make for a comfortable barefoot walking area. on multi-day trips i find that i need to air out my feet and it makes a huge difference.

That is some great stuff man..,..Glad you got out. That mooon, WOW...I think I'd be howling at it....! Thanks for posting.

I was :o I had my flask and was howling then the coyotes starting howling then I threw more wood on the fire!

That looks like a good spot. With your buckthorn and other brush you could use that for a brush fence and gain some privacy or limit the route of critters through the area while you are sleeping. Probably no shortage of it, same here. Looks like you are in a river bottom, without giving away your spot, what area are you in?

Grass in doing well after the 3rd week.

Some wildflower sprouts as well. I spread the wildflower seeds around each larger tree.

Nice pics, good idea seeding your hangout.
Who made that barong like chopper and specs? looks like a good one

Were you testing your tomahawk and wetterlings, just wondered why you would bring two when you pack in.

Regards

That's a Fiddleback 12" machete. Of all my sharps, it gets used the most!

Checked out my grass again and it's really thickening up! Garlic mustard is popping up all over. The other little sprouts are the invasive honeysuckle. I need to finish prying out the stumps. I applied herbicide to the stumps a few days after cutting but obviously it didn't do much.

This is so damn cool. It's exactly what I want to create, a semi-permanent camp area off the beaten path where I can go relax for a few days at a time. My cabin-on-the-lake if you will (minus the cabin). That place really looks like a little oasis, compared to the bleak, overgrown rats nest you started with. Really cool man, hope to see more pictures. What are your future plans? a little veggie garden would be cool...
