Just a heads up to my fellow forumites, tonight I received an email claiming to be from ebay that my account had been used for fraudulent purchases and threatening to close it if I didn't click on an enclosed link within 72 hours to "update" my info. I of course DID NOT do so, and forwarded the message to EBAY's security. They confirmed it was not from them.

Thanks for the heads up, I'd like to add that I have received phoney Paypal notices. Careful folks!

I know this is slightly off topic but it does concern ebay .. and knives.

I saw an auction the other day for a knife that looked a hell of a lot like a Spyderco ripoff. Is this common?

There are so many Spydie clones you can't keep track of them. One internet outfit was giving away a free knife with orders over certain amounts -- a Spydie clone and an Emerson clone.

I've gotten several similar notices. :barf: They even claim that my account will be suspended. Cyberscum!

Dont think that you are getting much of anything from these "clones". When purchased in bulk they run about the same as a U.S. postage stamp. Then the folks who deal in them mark them up 10 times or more.

"Awesome knife for 5 bucks."

In my mind a knife distributed at sub one dollar levels and sold at pluss 5 dollar levels is the most expensive knife one could buy :D.

Yup. For everyone else here's the address to forward those to:

spoof@ebay.com

They'll email you back and tell you if it was a fraud and then investigate it.

URGENT!

It has come to our attention that you may have received counterfeit funds. For your security and protection you must immediately send us all your currency so we can examine them for authenticity and so that you can avoid potential criminal prosecution.

P.S.
This is not a fraud.

Sincerely,
Your Bank

I get many of these ebay notices and they are dangerous because the email addresses look genuine. But I never trust any notices that want me to disclose information or that entail disclosure of passwords etc. If I think there might be a problem I go to the site and sign in to check. I would also suggest you not use any hyperlinks in emails: navigate to the appropriate site yourself.

On the other hand, messages like these are 100% legit.

My name is Prince Kuala Mustapha Badoomba Muphasa Smith. I am trapped in a telephone booth in Muphaspha, Swaziland.
There is a hippopotamus preventing me from getting to the bank to cash my cheque for 15 billion dollars for my share of the estate of my father King Buala Mustapha Badoomba Muphasa Smith. If you send me $50 right away I will buy some carrots to distract the hippopotamus and will run to the bank and send you a cheque for $5,000,000. But hurry. The hippo is hungry and my cheque expires soon. Send cash to: Prince Kuala Hippo Fraud, USA Division, PO Box 234, New York New York.

PS, this is not a fraud.
Yours sincerely,
